Bios: Oil Slick

Function: Anarchist Road Warrior

"Fear is my ally."

Vehicle to vehicle combat is something all Transformers are skilled in, but with Oil Slick, it's a particular specialty. He knows more about how to disable and destroy a vehicle than almost anyone else in the galaxy. He knows that if he can break down the robot inside, the vehicle will come screeching to a halt. Canisters attached to his sides dump special chemicals that unlock the deepest fears of any robot exposed to them, while at the same time rotting wheels and burning through axles. Once the vehicle mode is destroyed, Oil Slick moves in close to finish off with his chain weapon.

Tri-Klops Saw It Coming... Or Didn't

When I think about Masters of the Universe... I usually don't think about Tri-Klops. Like Zodak, I mostly remember only seeing him at the odd drug store several years after he was released. Recently I got his Origins figure and really want the Mega Construx version which comes with the Battle Ram (I haven't found it yet). Somehow the lack of attention over time passed has made him more desirable. Admittedly it's a 'new to me' type situation. I did grab his 2002 version back then. So I guess I haven't totally ignored him over the years.

Tri-Klops's place in fiction pretty much varies on whomever is writing. In mini-comics and the original cartoon he was practically He-Man's equal (or an oaf), and in the 2002 series he was more of a mad scientist type. The classics version has him as a blind bounty hunter and his visor allows him to see. The visor is pretty much Tri-Klops trademark gimmick. Once again depending on the writer, it's either cybernetic or magical. Generally the visor gives him a variety of vision related special abilities. Seeing all around him, around corners, through things, great distances, optic blasts... you name it. Whatever the writer comes up to match the hunter/swordsman's abilities at the time.

Sometimes I wonder if Tri-Klops inspired Blade from the live action movie. They're pretty similar. Aside from the visor, the two aren't that different. Weirdly enough, in the Filmation series bible gave him a more interesting back story. Tri-Klops, Evil Lynn and Beastman were originally crew members on Queen Marlena's spaceship (she was an astronaut who crash landed on Eternia). They had mutated in the crash which somehow lead to them joining the Evil Warriors. This origin was abandoned. Probably because somebody realized the awkwardness of the Queen watching her son beat up former colleagues on a regular basis. "Go son, stomp a mud hole in his ass and walk it dry. He never paid me back for that Starbucks."

Bios: Megatron

Function: Predacon Leader

"The Earth is mine!"

The brilliant and evil leader of the Predacons, Megatron will destroy anything and anyone in order to get what he wants. And what he wants on Earth is the energy contained in the planet. But Megatron has no interest in sharing - he'll conquer the planet and take it all for himself. He has survived numerous battles and is an excellent fighter - making him a deadly enemy. His many victories have helped him gain the power of a six-step change skill.

This week we're going to listen to an episode of Lights Out from December 16, 1936. Poltergeist (also known as Gravestone) is the tale of 3 friends who discover the hard way that you shouldn't dance on graves. It's a great scary story with an ending you didn't see coming.

Bios: Side Burn

Function: Speedy Knight

"Think you can keep up? I doubt it !"

Side Burn is a born exhibitionist; if its loud, fast, or haphazard, you can't bet he's tried it. Then bragged about it at a local Energon pub. Upgraded with a new Spark engine, Side Burn is now topping land speeds once thought to be unreachable and still hasn't found his limit. Although he'd be more than happy on the track, watching the world streak by his windshield in an indecipherable blur, Side Burn knows that his speed will someday provide a key advantage in the war against the Decepticons. Even if Prowl and his other friends in the newly-formed Autobot military don't share his outlook.

Codzilla: King Of The Sammiches

I'm a sucker for clever marketing. Red Lobster decided to hop on the Godzilla bandwagon (thanks to a certain popular movie) and market their new Crispy Cod Sandwich as Codzilla. Why would they do such a thing you may ask? Because it's HUGE. Needless to say I was sold and had one Saturday night. This was mentioned during the Mortal Kombat post. It's a pretty big deal.

I picked up the bun and put it back down, as it wades toward the TV tray in the center of my living room. Codzilla.

Codzilla, as you'd expect from a seafood restaurant was a fried fish sandwich. An enormous piece of cod on a tasty brioche bun with cole slaw and tarter sauce. Thankfully the tartar sauce was served on the side as I don't care for the stuff. Like everything else though, I did squirt some ketchup on it. It's not an official tie in or anything, so really I bought $80 worth of Red Lobster because of a image and I'm not one bit sorry. Do you know what it's like to eat left over mozzarella sticks for three days? Awesome.

Bios: Vortex

Function: Interrogation

"I'm Vortex, fly me -- if you dare!"

Gives a ride to remember -- in your nightmares! Takes Autobots on dizzying, death-defying flights to scare information out of them. As helicopter, goes 300mph with a range of 1200 miles. Whirls rotor blades to create 200-300 mph wind funnels. uses semi-automatic glue gun. Combines with fellow Combaticons to form "Bruticus".

Mortal Kombat

Like many others, I watched the new Mortal Kombat movie this past weekend. With a Doordashed order of Red Lobster (which in itself is another post), the Mrs. and I turned on HBO Max and started the movie. I just wanted to point out that I initially misspelled 'turned' and the spelling suggestion was turd. This is a reboot of the MK film franchise after the second movie was so bad that it took 24 years to hope people forgot about it. Sadly, this wasn't wasn't that great either.

To be fair, Mortal Kombat doesn't have a solid track record outside of the games. The first movie is a pretty well regarded B movie. Video game adaptions are usually more miss than hit. After months of hype and an awesome trailer, this looked like it was finally going to be the breakout video game movie and really nail Mortal Kombat as most view it should.

I'm honestly not crapping on the movie. I enjoyed myself while watching the movie, as not so great as it was. It was a bad movie, but a fun bad movie. Actually, the first scene was great. I wish the movie was just more of that. Kano was generally fun. So was Kabal. Sub-Zero and Scorpion? Wonderful. I wish Goro has more to do, but liked what of him was there. Mortal Kombat didn't live up to my expectations, but I still enjoyed it.

There's a new episode of Not As Brightly Lit for a little Halloween in April up for your listening enjoyment. I've got a fun week of posts for you all. Bios: Crossblades

Function: Ground Reinforcement

"A warrior is only as good as his weapons."

A hyperactive, overheated sky jockey. Talks constantly. Patrols Autobot headquarter perimeters with lightning speed, searching for Decepticon infiltrators. Only stops long enough to refuel and check his weapons. Armed with automatic 35mm machine guns, air-to-air missiles, and a searing thermal cannon. Also equipped with mid-flight refueling capabilities and cloaking device that makes him invisible. Transforms to supersonic dragster, equipped with high-speed turbo boosters and electro-jammers that disrupt enemy circuitry. Outer shell chopper equipped with metal-eating roto-blades. Combines with dragster to form ultra-sonic helicopter equipped with front-mounted magneto-ray that magnetizes on impact.

Godzilla Burns While Jet Jaguar Isn't King Kong

I happily found Playmates new Burning Godzilla and Jet Jaguar figures while at Target last Saturday. These are part of the 6.5" Godzilla line that was previously exclusive to Walmart. I've been a pretty big cheerleader for Playmates Godzilla toys and happy to see more. Playmates has seemingly improved their work on this line as these are soft vinyl figures closer in detail to a Bandai figure as opposed to the hard vinyl ones from earlier releases. At first glance, I honestly assumed they were Bandai reissues. A big step up from that Shin Godzilla.

Burning Godzilla represents the big guy as he appeared in Godzilla vs Destoroyah. Jet Jaguar is Toho's attempt at an Ultraman like superhero of their own before going with Zone Fighter. Jet Jaguar doesn't get much love here in the states, so I was pretty happy to get this toy. Hopefully this part of Playmates Godzilla line continues as I'd love more stuff like this at my local stores for pretty reasonable prices.

Bios: Predacon

Birthplace: The Badlands, Planet Trilenium

Primary Specialty: Alien Tracking

Secondary Specialty: Arm Wrestler

A vicious Lunartix alien, PREDACON makes his living by capturing criminals and selling them back to the Galactic Authorities. If the authorities reject the criminals, Predacon imprisons them in his private alien zoo. This four-armed monster is loyal only to his tribal clan on planet Trilenium, and he's proud to wear its ancestral medallion on his chest plate, along with Lunartix hieroglyphics that are etched into his arm guards.

Bios: Razorclaw

Function: Undercover Attack

Capable of remaining motionless beneath a layer of sand, Razorclaw is one of the best quick attack specialists they've got! When enemies approach his hidden location, his powerful pincer claw shoots up through the surface to capture and impale victims with the claw's protruding cyber-spikes! Radar defeating shell armor allows him to stay cloaked from Maximal sensors. Blaster rifle in secondary in claw fires disrupter particles, temporarily paralyzing his unsuspecting prey.

Shit Slush Head

In the late 80's Mattel decided to refresh He-Man by taking him to space in 'The New Adventures of He-Man'. No longer fighting armies of living Halloween decorations on Eternia, He-Man finds himself fighting space mutants on the planet Primus (no relation). In the mini-comics, Skeletor takes control of the Evil Mutants and it's business as usual. In the cartoon however, Skeletor makes an alliance with the leader of the Evil Mutants Flogg.

Slush Head is a swamp creature member of the Evil Mutants. The fish bowl on his head is full of swamp water to keep him alive when he's having new adventures with He-Man. In toy form this makes for a neat toy gimmick as do his tentacles. Looking straight out of a cheesy sci fi B movie he also is packing a matching laser gun that can double as an axe. If Slush Head can't shoot you, I guess he can cut your head off.

Bios: Divebomb

Function: Aerial Assault

"Conquer the skies and what's below you will fall."

He's like a kid at a candy store - always delighted by all the targets he has to choose from. Builds mecha-nests atop tall buildings and mountains; composed of late Model sports cars, wings of jets, theater marquees. Back-mounted rocket thrusters allows speeds of 300mph, 2000 mile range. Can see a dime from 10,000 feet. Has particle-beam rifle with infra-red sight, and laser-guided sword. Magnetism inhibits flying ability. With fellow Predacons, forms Predaking.

GIJOE In Discount Missions

On my birthday last month, the Mrs. ended my quest for the new Dollar Tree GIJOE figures I had talked about before. Taped to each present was one of the much searched for figures (and some Tiny Turbo Changers, but we'll discuss those later) and I was overjoyed. Today seemed like a good day to talk about them. I hardly ever plan anything on this site ahead of time. It's complete anarchy. Just chaos.

These are mini figures of GIJOE characters sold at Dollar Tree and other similar stores for $1 each. They're small, about the size of a M.A.S.K figure without any articulation. The sculpts are pretty nice and so is the paint. Destro probably got the worst paint job, with his exposed skin being the same shade of grey as the trademark mask. It's not terrible though, just a little better paint detail would go a long way.

I think my favorite is the Cobra Red Ninja followed closely by Snake Eyes. They just came out the best in my non- snaked eyes. I really like this type of mini figures sold at Dollar Tree and other similar stores. Basic inexpensive figurines of characters I like. They've got a particular charm about them and there's a thrill of buying a handful of them for $1 each. I hope to see more figures released. I'd love wacky colored repaints.

It's Not A Curse, It's Just Monday

Looks like it's the start of a brand new week here on Planet Zone! There's a new episode of Not As Brightly Lit up for your weekly dose of something spooky. This is the first show that I've posted a old time radio show and it seemed to be pretty popular. If you like such a thing, there'll be more coming! Also, for readers who've used the email subscription service. That service has been discontinued. Until I find a replacement, I've removed the option from the site. I'm not sure how much longer it will work. If you just stop getting the email posts... I guess it finally stopped. Thanks to those of you who participated in it. Hopefully I'll get it restored sooner than later. I've got a fun week of posts coming that I hope you all like. Thank you for reading Zone Base and as always please share with your friends!

Bios: Windsweeper

Function: Air Defense

"Uninvited guests soon become smouldering wrecks."

Malicious and meticulous. Feels the sky is his home and that it should be kept "clean" of anything that flies. Notorious for shooting his fellow Decepticons. High-intensity heat generators in wings enable him to sear through solid steel. Also equipped with long-range infrared scanners, sensitive enough to find a lug-nut in a junkyard. Armed with two, lock-target, long-range laser cannons.

Springoween

It's firmly the middle of April and spring is full steam ahead. Just look at all that damn pollen! It's officially 108 days until the start of the spooky season (August 1st) and 198 days until Halloween. To be fair, I'm not counting in the first trickling of Halloween I normally start seeing in June into the equation. Nor the various product catalogs for this years offerings that I've been looking through since January... *ahem*. THE CLOCK IS TICKING. Oh hey look, donuts! That's another of my five billion Halloween traditions, I get spooky donuts every year!

Bios: Fizzle

Function: Military Strategist

"Planning a battle is ten times more important than fighting it."

Overloads his circuits with grandiose schemes and cheap fuel. Acts as if his true worth is measured not by what he does, but how much he talks about doing it. If he could run on his own hot air, he'd go forever. In car Mode, leaves trails of flame in his path. Capable of going from 0 to 200 mph in 8 seconds. Prone to stalling on left turns. Possesses superior logistics and geographical data banks.

There's nothing better than a good spooky story at Halloween... or anytime of the year! This weeks episode we listen to the Quiet Please episode 'Camera Obscura' from October 13th, 1947.

Bios: Spike Stone

Type: Related to triceratops with horned nose and armored body

Spike Stone and other Rockasaurs roam the land showing no favor to either good or evil rock warriors. Rockasaurs guard their territory jealously attacking all who are foolish enough to challenge their might! When Spike Stone changes from rock to beast, he becomes a menacing monster!

Ninjor Will Sneak Up On Your Ass

Ninjor was introduced alongside Scare Glow when Skeletor conjured two of the most evil beings from all time and space. As you can see, Ninjor follows alongside the living Halloween decoration motif of MOTU. A standard black suited ninja, but with red devil boots and gloves.

That's because Ninjor isn't a human, he's a straight up demon. That conjuring that Skeletor did was during a special time when the veil between dimensions is weak for one hour (Halloween at 3am?) So what I'm saying is Skeletor just happens to have a demon ninja in his ranks. Why not? Carpe diem.

Les Nouveaux Exosuits

That jingle so is pleasant that I'd like to think those Action Masters are out for a Sunday drive instead of fighting a war.

Fighting Dynowarz

Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus is a game by Bandai for the NES from 1990. Back then I loved it. I haven't played it in 30 years, I don't know if I'd love it now. But I still think it's pretty awesome. You play as Professor Proteus and the Cyborasaurus. Levels swap between Proteus running and jumping and shooting and piloting Cyborasaurus. Who then runs, jumps, and shoots things. Cyborasaurus is a Robosaur and you'll spend his levels fighting other Robosaurs. If you're keeping score, that's a space dude driving a robot dinosaur fighting bad guys who also have robot dinosaurs. What's not to love?
Unfortunately there's not much info on the game out there. It wasn't a big hit. Most sites that bother to talk about it are basic reference sites or much bigger sites than this making fun of a weird old game. Part of me wants to believe it was part of a bigger series or was planned to be. I tried looking up a Japanese or other versions just to see what else there was and... nothing. It just feels like it was bigger than it was, like there's more to it. Guess not. At least I can remember it fondly.

I mean, dude, giant robot dinosaur.

New Week In A Jiffy

It's a new week here on Planet Zone! If you're in the mood for something spooky, there's an all new episode of Not As Brightly Lit! Thank you for reading Zone Base and as always share with your friends! Or your enemies... but I'm not sure why you'd be talking with them.

Bios: Mainframe

Function: Systems Analyst

"A program is only as good as its programmer."

A walking, talking computer terminal. Would rather attack fourth order differential equations than Decepticons. Totally committed to his work. Views the galactic conflict as an inconvenience he must tolerate rather than a struggle in which he must participate. Is often compelled to flex his intellectual muscle, when needed. Equipped with 200,000 mega-byte capacity. His pugnacious partner, Push-Button, prefers converting to self-propelled proton rifle mode and disintegrating Decepticons over his assigned task of debugging Mainframe's various programs.

Mini-Puft Figure Mania

Because Ghostbusters: Afterlife dropped an awesome bomb on the world, it was revealed that Hasbro would be selling new blind packed mini figures of the new Mini-Pufts this fall! They'll be blind packed in containers of Stay Puft marshmallow cream (trying making a fluffernutter with this goo). The little guys will be hidden inside the 'goopy marshmallow-like compound'.

Hopefully the 'compound' won't be as sticky as the ectoplasm in the slime tubes from 2019. Combining these with the new Ecto-Plasm and Ecto-Plasm Ghost Gushers and I've got a lot of slime to dig through soon. I'm not complaining though, it's gonna be great! Hope I don't get any on the carpet.

Creepy Invader From Space

Creepy's great when you need a little spooky shit in your life. As the standard retail release or the cool mail away version, he's just a great example of what makes a Monster Gobot so awesome. With the reveal of Kingdom Scorponok earlier I've been hoping for a new Creepy as a repaint. I can't help to associate the two thanks to Scorponok's Happy Meal toy. I'd imagine it'd be perfect for a Netflix Transformer at Walmart. Oh man, what if that came out at Halloween time?

Not As Brightly Lit: Five Million Fault's At Freddy's

Listen And Download Here!

A scary movie is a great way to have some spooky fun any time of the year. Though if you've caught yourself yelling 'what are you doing?' at the TV... your not alone. This week, Rob talks some of the silliness used to combat Freddy Krueger. Because seriously, a Dungeon Master?

Wednesday, April 7, 2021

Bios: Terragator

Function: Swamp Warrior

Most Transformers find that smelly, mucky environments clog up their circuitry. Not the half-croc, half-turtle Terragator. he prefers it. Terragator is most at home in the swamp lands and sewers. Part of the Predacon elite amphibious warriors, his specialty is land/water assault. In robot mode, he wields an impenetrable shield, and his hand reveals an awesome weapon.

SPC. Shift

With Shift we're coming to an end of our weekly look at Final Faction toys until some new stuff comes out. Allegedly the vehicles are due sometime in the summer with the next batch of figures by fall. So you can be sure that I'll be talking about them when the time comes. For now, let's look at Shift, the ninja of Alpha Team 1.

Shift comes with a set of swords that she can technically hold, but are molded together to mount on her back. I have seen folks trim them away to function as handheld swords. However if you've got the Covert Ops accessory set, there's plenty of appropriate to her character weaponry so that you can keep those swords as a backpack. Shift fills the role of ninja type warrior while adding a little variety to Alpha Team 1.

Bios: Warwolf

Primary Specialty: Manimal - Bounty Hunter/Mercenary

Secondary Specialty: Alien Arms Dealer

After mutating into his evil monster personality, this planet stomping alien will bite anything that moves, and almost anything that doesn't! His poor vision once led him to swallow a fallen meteor that he'd mistaken for a glowing mound of space algae. Soon thereafter, WARWOLF began to expel the contents of his stomach, coughing up an entire tail section of a COBRA helicopter. Talk about an appetite, when this guy get hunger pangs...RUN!

Avengers Assemble Mech Suits

I saw the damnedest thing Saturday morning. The wife and I made a quick run to Walmart for a few things and whilst looking around the toy section hoping to find a Mechagodzilla (man that movie sold some toys) I saw something new. Avengers MECHSTRIKE! There was NERF role play themed toys and two of these new MECH suit sets. Captain America and Ironman. I grabbed a Captain America as I was just blown away by it all.

A quick Google search later and I discovered MECHSTRIKE is a new major event in Marvel comics that's getting a bunch of merchandising including these new toys I found. My days of heavily reading comics has been over for awhile, so I had no clue. The action figure line though has really captured my interest. There's the MECH suit sets I've mentioned as well as regular action figures. The standard figures have a more sci fi look to them to fit the theme and have nifty shields that I'm sure play into the story.

There's an obvious comparison to Transformers Pretenders when you first look at the toy, but it's a little different. The front opens with a hinge on the top of the suits head and you load the figure in. The figures arms hang out the sides of the suit as well. That's not a deal breaker for me, but maybe for some. The figure is pleasantly articulated and you can put it into a bunch of poses. The suit... not so much. It has basic articulation in the shoulders and elbows. Once again that might be a deal breaker for some, but once again not for me. I really liked my Captain America MECHSTRIKE toy and plan to get more.

There's a variety of ports on the suit, so I assume the idea is to attach things from other toys and deck out your MECH. This isn't the first time Marvel characters have been given this type of gimmick and it usually works well with them. The figures are the 6" scaled figures more recent Marvel figures have been, which has resonated well with me. In the suit, the toy is 9" and is pretty beefy. It's cool and even in it's simplicity manages to grab a lot of attention. It's that cross of bright colors, manga/sci fi theming, and well loved characters. So far I think it's pretty great. You may have noticed.

In Space, No One Will Hear You Hate Mondays

It's Monday and the start of a new week here on Planet Zone! There's an all new episode of Not as Brightly Lit for your earholes to enjoy. Easter was this past weekend and I had a good time with my family. The Mrs. even made me a super cool basket with all sorts of blind bag fun and even a Tiger Electronics Transformers LCD game! It's gonna be a weird week. I've got an appointment for my first covid-19 vaccination Tuesday and frankly I'm a little uneasy. I'm a lot of things and uncomfortable with injections is one of them. Oh well, at least I'll get my part in herd immunity out of it. Outside of trying to escape a global pandemic, I've got a fun week of content coming this week! Thanks for reading and as always, please share with your friends!

Godzilla vs Kong

After waiting an eternity, Godzilla vs Kong was finally released last Wednesday. Thanks to covid-19 adding a few more delays, the movie was released to theaters and streaming via HBO Max. That's how I watched it, at home with some takeout from a steakhouse Saturday night. I'd love to have watched it on release day, but as I've said before here- my work schedule makes watching movies hard during the week. Not to mention I had just got my internet back after a EF-4 tornado went through my town last week. After all the delays, a few more days didn't seem that bad.

I loved this movie. Which you probably guessed already. I've been very happy with the Monsterverse's use of Kong and Godzilla and the world they gave them to play in. Ultimately this movie was the planned culmination of the series. So depending on how the pendulum swings it could be the last movie or the start of a new phase. Considering how successful it's been so far, hopefully they'll let them fight for a few more movies.

Speaking of success, the movie is pulling the kind of box office you'd expect in a big budget Hollywood blockbuster before covid-19 changed everything. That's pretty amazing. While the toys have been selling steadily at my local Walmarts, they were completely cleared out Saturday morning. Considering the extra stock they put out a few days more and that's awesome. Finding a Mechagodzilla might prove to be a challenge. If that's due to a successful movie making people want monsters toys, then I'm happy to share in the selection.

Bios: Gigastorm

Function: Grand Duke of Destruction

This is Megastorm's new form, powered up under the influence of evil Angolmois energy. He transforms in three stages, from destroying dinosaur to monolithic base to attack fortress. His audacious offensives, making use of his tremendous power, force the Cybertrons into tight spots again and again. He is on the verge of no longer considering Galvatron his older brother, and the danger of a split in the camp now looms large. The Gigahorn on his head is harder than diamond, and can pierce through all manner of things.

Happy Apriloween!

It's Easter weekend and you know what that means? That's right, another excuse for me to force Halloween into something. Fortunately, it's not too hard of a task today. Long time readers know of my love for PAAS Halloween make up kits, something that hasn't been made in a very long time unfortunately.

If you've been to a store recently, you've seen all sorts of Easter Egg dye kits. Many made by PAAS. I'm not sure why PAAS eventually got out of the Halloween game. It seemed like they'd always be around until they weren't. I guess with the company founded on Easter they thought better to focus on eggs than WWF Halloween costumes. It's not like there's a shortage of make up kits either. Maybe I'm just playing favorites. Something about those boxes.

Bios: Granite

Rank- Good rock warrior

Body Type- Granite: a tough-as-nails composition that reflects his strength and determination.

Weapon- T-Gun

A happy-go-lucky rock with a ready laugh, Granite is truly a "gently giant". But put him in the thick of a fight and he's one of the most fearsome combatants on the battlefeild.

Despite its ordinary appearance, the T-Gun's shiny bullets will pierce anything and that's enough to send any evil rock running for cover!

Not As Brightly Lit: Amityville Fools Day

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD HERE

It's April Fools Day and a good of a time to talk about something that most people think is a hoax. This week, Rob takes a little time to look at the Amityville Horror. Once the scene of a horrific mass murder then later became one of the most famous haunted houses in the world.
