Unicron (Planet/Transparent Version) [Galaxy Version]

Around the beginning of the year, I talked about the transparent Unicron Head model kit Blokees had released. In that same vein, they'd recently released a kit of his Planet Mode as well. Like the head, it was originally available in a standard series, with the translucent version obtainable by scanning QR codes for redemption, before they eventually made it available to the masses. Well, it's available to everyone now, and that's what we're looking at today.

Like the transparent head kit, this is one sharp-looking Unicron. Obviously, he's getting featured a lot this year due to the 40th anniversary of the movie, but let's face it: Unicron's kind of a big deal in Transformers. He's going to pop up from time to time regardless. It just so happens there's a specific occasion to observe this year that makes it a little more special.

Like the head kit, I was looking forward to getting this one, especially in the translucent colors, as it looks so much neater.

Going in, I wasn't expecting to have too much trouble assembling the kit, as Galaxy Versions are normally quick builds. And this one probably isn't normally a problem for most people.

ME, though? I fumbled my way through the entire process, completely all thumbs.

I can see a Master Grade builder reading that and laughing at me, and it's probably well-deserved mockery, as I clearly wasn't paying enough attention to the instructions like I should have been. Being a Galaxy Version, the instructions came in full-sized booklets that are much easier to read than the ones printed on the backs of the cards I normally deal with when assembling Defender Versions and Wheels. So, like an arrogant ass, I just skimmed them over and completely missed that, despite so many parts looking like they could fit wherever, they totally couldn't.

For example, one of the first steps is assembling the rings that fit around his sides. Only one fits on one side, and the other fits on the other. I have no clue why, but it took a few seconds of trying to put one piece in the wrong hole before I finally thought to try the other one.

For the record, I don't claim to be a rocket scientist.

Then, after joining that bit of rings to the Planet Mode core, you put on the planet surface pieces, which are four shell pieces that look practically identical for the most part. They're also translucent, so it's super easy to just NOT see a detail because it's see-through.

Basically, two distinct shell pieces were meant to go on the bottom, while the other two went on top. Two of the shells had connector pegs with an additional little shape, while the other two had standard pegs that would actually fit into the openings intended for the ones with that additional little shape.

Remember when I mentioned the shells look almost identical? Yeah, I threw an additional little tantrum after getting it wrong for the millionth time.

Actually, I'd get three on, and for whatever reason, I couldn't get the fourth one on. Then I'd take them all off and try again... and the fourth still wouldn't fit. I actually got mad, put it to the side, and came back to it a few hours later.

When I came back to it a few hours later, I STILL somehow got it wrong, got mad again, and then, like a damn child, took it and the remaining shell to my wife, asking her if she could tell where the difference was because, for whatever reason, it was escaping me.

She looked for a minute and pointed out the different opening that I'd somehow overlooked. I thanked her and had a snack because I'd been having a rough time and needed a few minutes away from Unicron.

Who is an asshole.

Afterward, I put those shells on with no problem and began assembling the other set of rings that circle Unicron horizontally. This time, it was the instructions' fault for not being super clear, but after some trial and error, I got these pieces in place.

There are four pieces that peg in at the top, bottom, left, and right. Like the shells, they had different pegs depending on their location for some reason, along with connecting pieces that fit in between them. After a little trial and error with those connector pieces, I got the larger set of rings assembled and then put the stand together in about two seconds because that part was pretty simple.

Aside from me bumbling through the instructions, this is a pretty great model kit of Unicron's Planet Mode.

I know some people criticize Transformers products that don't transform. Admittedly, when you name something after the gimmick, it's going to be an ongoing thing. But something like this makes the lack of that transformation worthwhile. Unicron has had a few transforming toys by this point, and that transformation is usually a complete nightmare due to the fact that he transforms from a humanoid shape to a round one. That, and he's expected to be giant, so now you're wrestling this big thing with a million folding parts.

A smaller model kit of just one mode manages to be screen-accurate without becoming a giant nightmare... aside from somehow reading the instructions completely wrong.

I swear, I normally feel like a somewhat intelligent person unless I'm trying to tap to pay (it's literally a different place to tap every single time!), but man, I really screwed up reading these instructions.

What I'm saying is, I had a challenging time assembling him, which was likely my fault, but OH MAN, was it infuriating.

The finished product, however, is really nice-looking. Like with the head kit, the translucent colors look amazing, almost like something intended to be more premium.

The assembly of his maw (which my wife insists is just a big butthole) allows the pinchers to open and close by pushing on the maw/butthole. This is done with a clever little joint that installs underneath, which the pinchers individually attach to.

Overall, this is another solid Blokees product that, like their other offering, I absolutely love. With the rising costs of toys, focusing mainly on model kits like Blokees feels like a more favorable way to go much of the time. Looking at this Unicron sitting on my bookshelf alone is a pretty good selling point for that idea.

Weekly Update 10/26/26 – Halloweener

A new week has raised its head, Zone Base readers, but not just any week. It's Halloweek! That's right, Halloween is this Saturday, meaning we've got one spooky week in store for us. Whether you're in school or in the working world, there's bound to be pumpkins and candy all over the damn place. Come Friday, many of you will likely have some sort of costume contest at your workplace, or at the very least one of those seasonal T-shirts that declares that this is, in fact, your Halloween costume.

All leading up to the main event: Halloween Saturday!

Of course, that means the decorations will be coming down soon around here, as we'll return to the regular, non-red-moon-affected Zone Base... which, to be fair, really isn't that different. I mean, that cursed tape has been playing on loop in the VCR since 2016.

For whatever reason, the embedded TikTok videos stopped working on the site over the weekend. I assumed it would clear itself up, but for whatever reason it's still not working. I've went back and edited last week's posts and updated the ones scheduled for this week to have pictures. From now on, site posts will have pics like they used to with a link to the video. Until the embeds start working again, I guess there's just a bunch of posts in the backlog with dead videos. Sorry guys, it's annoying for me too.

Transformers

Some recent leaks of upcoming Generations toys have me pretty excited. The direction of Studio Series figures being faithful to their source material while Generations offers more imaginative takes on the characters looks promising. I'm absolutely ecstatic for that Commander Class Thunderwing, but admittedly, I'm not happy at all about the upcoming price hikes.

I've got the feeling purchases will be slower, with more stuff being picked up on sale or when it shows up at liquidation stores. I can't think of a time when price gouging was a good thing.

Fight back.

Blokees

The long-anticipated Defender Version Volcanicus combiner was shown off at the recent China Toy Expo, much to my happiness. You all know just how much I love the Defender Version scale, and the combiners have been great! I mean... I kinda forgot about the Generations Bruticus, but absolutely pounced on the Bruticus Blokees kit when it was finally available.

Recent Defender Version cases have been including Dinobots in alt mode, leading to speculation (and teases) about Volcanicus. Knowing he'll be real and in my hands soon is super exhilarating. Longtime readers know I love my Dinosaur Squadron Beast Lord Volcanicus, so much so that I made up an unnecessarily long super robot name for no reason. Speaking of, Defender Version 09- Power of the Primes has been leaked and I am STOKED!

Also shown off were new Wheels and Galaxy Version previews. More IDW-inspired robot modes for Galaxy Version is definitely a good idea, as it seems to be the perfect size for that era.

More Wheels? Yes, please! A CT Ultra Magnus kit was shown off, something I'm definitely looking forward to, along with previews of CO5, which so far has included traditional G1 Optimus Prime and a space shuttle mode Sky Lynx. You guys know how much I'm enjoying Wheels, so these will definitely be pure dopamine.

Yolopark

Yolopark showed off their upcoming Mini Wave 4 at the China Toy Expo as well, and it looks great! Wheeljack, robot mode Grimlock, and Sideswipe are just a few of the classic cast members showing up in this size class.

I still haven't gotten Wave 3, and I'm admittedly still butthurt over the lack of customer service for the errors on that Wave 2 case I got at the beginning of the year. And yeah, I'm pretty burned over them ghosting me on that giveaway I won on Threads at the beginning of the year, too.

I love the kits, just not terribly fond of the company currently.

I'm still hoping to find some of their kits that have allegedly been showing up at Ross stores, though mine seemingly haven't gotten any.

Dammit.

Power Rangers

Images of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition Season 3 toys have made their way onto the internet, and with them comes the next combinable Megazord! I loved the Ninja Zords, so I'm definitely excited to get that big-ass monstrosity!

The Weekend

I had one great weekend, Zone Base readers. As the beginning of Halloweek, we had all sorts of spooky fun!

While doing our weekly shopping Saturday, the Mrs and I got Halloween donuts from Dunkin' Donuts. We normally get our donuts from Donut Worry and had already gotten a Halloween dozen from them earlier in the season, but we wanted to grab some Dunkin' as well.

For dinner Saturday night, we ordered the Halloween pizza from Papa Johns (an annual tradition of ours)!

I headed out Sunday morning to stop by CVS to hopefully score one last bag of candy corn for the season, as it's been gone from all my local stores for the past week. I was unsuccessful, but I did get a bag of Mellowcreme Pumpkins, so it wasn't a total waste. I actually hadn't gotten any of those Pumpkins this year, as the new Mellowcreme Graveyards took most of my attention in that department and might have been my favorite candy of this spooky season.

CVS was just a side mission, however, as the main quest was to Starbucks to get a Black Cat Frappuccino for the Mrs and myself. We love Starbucks, as I've made clear before, so it's obvious we'd get their annual Halloween drink. As the name suggests, it's themed after a black cat this year (complete with chocolate cat ears!), meaning it's a black drink with whipped cream topping. The flavor was chocolate cake, which the Mrs loved, but for someone who normally drinks zero-sugar drinks (I even pace myself on candy, seriously), that was super sweet.

Like, wow. Diabetes in a cup.

As a Halloweek treat, Mom surprised us with lunch at Outback Steakhouse! We'd eaten there the week prior, and both the Mrs and Mom loved their Halloween drink, so another one was in store for them. Me, I had a Coke Zero, but kept the toy spider that came with the Halloween drink (I don't drink either)... something we may have a small army of at the moment.

Afterwards, Mom stayed at our house and watched Halloween specials with us as we carved our pumpkins! Later for dinner, I enjoyed some of the pot roast the Mrs had made in the crock pot, and I'm looking forward to eating the leftovers later!

As for toys, I got a few. Christmas is coming, so my weekly purchases for myself are slowing down naturally, but I still grabbed a few small things.

I got a Transformers Big Headz blind box and pulled Barricade! I like these quite a bit and plan to get more. They come with a collector's card and sticker!

I also picked up a Blokees Galaxy Version blind box from the Light Our Darkest Hour series. I got Bombshell, whom I already have, but I definitely don't mind extra Insecticons! Something tells me that one's getting customized into a Waruder soon, though.

It's me. I'm telling myself that.

I also picked up the Red Dragon Thunderzord from MMPR Re-Ignition, as I really need to get to work completing the Thunder Megazord.

I'm currently enjoying Halloween cartoons as I write this from my laptop in the living room (a rare non-cell-phone Monday post!). I started the morning with a few episodes of The Real Ghostbusters before moving to the Forever Kids station on Pluto TV, which was showing the old Teen Wolf cartoon. Now they're showing Sabrina the Witch, so I'm watching Casper on Kartoon Channel.

It's Halloweek, so spooky shit is in order until it all ends this weekend!

Super Megatron [Defender Version 8- Battle Stars]

It was very hard to patiently wait for the Blokees Amazon store to stock the newest Defender Version Series 8, as they tend to stock their main online storefront first. I've ordered from there several times, but I prefer to buy from their Amazon store because I get free and much faster shipping.

Series 8 is themed after the Battlestars manga and story pages from late Japanese Generation 1, and I was pretty ecstatic when I saw the news leaked on the Thailand Blokees page I follow for news.

I guess I never expected some of the more obscure corners of G1 to make it to Blokees, but man, am I glad they did!

One of the characters featured in the set is Super Megatron, who, like Star Convoy/Star Optimus, has a whopping FOUR kits available in the series. There's his vehicle form and either a standard, Special Galaxy Type (metallic paint), or Special Armor Type (metallic paint and extra pieces that form his Megatron Omega form).

As I ordered the case, of course I was promised each figure in the wave and at least one of the special types. My case had standard Super Megatron, which I was perfectly okay with, as frankly, that's what I wanted.

We're going to be talking about the standard robot and vehicle modes today.

The vehicle kit is the one from the series that comes with a coin. I don't think I've talked about those here before. When you buy a case of Transformers Defender Version Blokees, one will come with a coin. That coin is usually one of three available.

My vehicle Super Megatron came with a silver Windblade coin, while Star Convoy and Swoop are also available in the series.

They really know how to feed into blind-box fanatics' ticks, and it works. I'll buy the occasional blind box at physical retail even if I already have the case, just in case it's got one of the random things I didn't get.

In case you're not familiar with Super Megatron, by the time Battlestars is taking place, Dark Nova shoots a beam of energy into Galvatron's tomb, resurrecting him as Megatron again. Though, of course, now he's in a new form.

Later on, Dark Nova upgrades him into Ultra Megatron before ultimately merging with him to form Star Giant, whose image will often pop up on normies' timelines, causing them to ask their more in-the-know friends just what the hell that thing is.

Super Megatron's vehicle mode is a flying-tank-type vehicle that's pretty nuts and looks like something that would be in a PC-98 game.

Being that this is a manga/story page from around 1991, that shouldn't be too surprising, as anime, manga, and games often shared creative talent and influences.

Super Megatron was designed by Masumi Kaneda, who also worked on Gundam and Ultraman print media, for example, while Ban Magami did a great deal of the manga art. Ban did a lot of the mechanical design for Danguard Ace, for example, and even worked on Galaxy Express 999.

Ban is also a super nice guy whom I've had several pleasant conversations with online. Most recently, to observe the start of autumn, he posted a drawing of foxes. I told him my wife, who loves foxes, would enjoy this.

He then asked me to give her his regards.

Not related to this topic specifically, but falling in line with the tangent.

Shōji Kawamori, who created Macross (which gave us Jetfire), also did a lot of design work on Diaclone, among other robot series. Recently, he did the mech design for Pragmata. I was already in love with that game before learning of that, and it just gave me another thing to appreciate about it.

Like I said, this flying tank definitely looks like it came from this era, and I love that about it. Also, I just dig the design in general.

The tank elements include four cannon barrels and a design that combines a traditional H-tank with something out of Wheeled Warriors, while the flying parts are mostly some tacked-on wings and boosters that just look fantastic.

I don't know how straight it could fly when those cannons fire, but it'd look awesome doing it.

The kit is a pretty good representation of the vehicle, and it assembled very easily, much to my surprise. Admittedly, after spending as much time with Blokees Wheels as I have, my mind automatically goes to their construction style.

Often, with Defender Version vehicle modes, there is some compatibility with robot-mode kits, but it looks like there are just some ports where a weapon could plug in. Either something's coming in the future to use them, or whatever can be done hasn't been discovered yet.

Or maybe there's nothing else, but let me dream.

Robot mode is a very impressive-looking Defender Version robot. Despite the smaller size and cuter designs, Defender Versions come out looking even more badass than larger kits.

That really translates well with characters like Super Megatron, whose weapon pods and flight gear form something of an ornamental armor that's imposing and slick-looking.

If you're not familiar with Battlestars but find yourself recognizing the design, in Transformers Animated, Megatron's Earth mode was designed to resemble Super Megatron, while his Cybertronian body was based somewhat on the 2007 movie design.

Neat, huh?

While I've always been partial to that badass ornamental armor I was talking about, I really enjoy the new fusion cannon, which I've always thought looks like the front of the SDF-1.

Once again, the multiple series and mediums influence each other, and that's a cannon that looks like it could have been in a variety of games.

It also looks like it'd hurt like hell if he just hit someone with it.

Super Megatron ultimately looks like a powered-up version of classic Megatron, which I guess is what he is. But it's also fitting, as Masumi Kaneda had a supervision role on Transformers: The Movie, which was the last time we'd seen the animated version of Megatron until Battlestars. The manga took place within the animated continuity.

Robot mode isn't very hard to assemble, despite all that cool ornamental armor. It really just snaps into place like a normal Defender Version kit.

As someone who appreciates how things come together, the modular design of Blokees' blind kits is very impressive, considering just how unique many of them are from one another.

If you've noticed how it's practically impossible for me to dislike a Blokees product, you'd be correct.

They clearly know my siren song.

Ultimately, this is another great set of kits by them and a great representation of Super Megatron in both vehicle and robot modes in the Defender Version scale that I clearly adore.

Both assemble pretty easily and look great.

I'm trying my best not to end this with a play on Super Megatron being super.

But seriously, if Blokees is willing to dig into the weirder corners of Japanese G1 like this, I'm all for it. There's a whole lot of Transformers history out there that deserves a little more love, and I'd be perfectly happy to see more of it show up in plastic form.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go admire my tiny flying tank.

*edit* the video before whatever caused them to stop working is here.

Weekly Update 10/19/26 – Please Set Super System Card

Welcome back to another week of robots, monsters, and misadventure, Zone Base readers!

We're halfway through October, meaning the red moon is almost gone, but until then we're still carving those pumpkins like there's no tomorrow. That's the problem with a holiday season: the actual holiday is the end of it. As much as I'm looking forward to handing out candy on Halloween night, like all of you, I'll be putting those decorations away the next day with a heavy heart. Until then, though, I'm lighting enough jack-o'-lanterns to burn the world down!

Thank you all for reading Zone Base! Please continue to support the TikTok and Instagram with your likes and follows, and help me grow this fun little side of the site!

Transformers-

Apparently, the lack of Cyberworld coverage from NYCC was made up for this past week, as a big Cyberworld leak hit the usual sources.

My quest to get and blog about all the Cyberworld toys continues! I still need the standard Energon Surge Cyber Changer Optimus Prime, Energon Surge Armored Cyber Changer Airachnid, the two pirate ships, Shockwave, Hound, and that giant Bumblebee. I hope to get them all before the new toys come out.

Fortunately, Cyberworld doesn't vanish as quickly as other toy lines do, so I can take my time acquiring them. But I am starting to chomp at the bit a little. The leak shows some really cool things that I can't wait to cover here. The quest continues!

I'm not sure if these figures will be part of whatever sub-branding and gimmick follows Energon Surge or not. There are a lot of toys that are possibly repaints, which is to be expected in what's essentially a budget line for children. Hasbro has also been doing a lot of cost-saving measures with multiple rereleases. Straight rereleases I'll likely skip, but I'm definitely down for fun new colors.

TRA CYBERWORLD CC SCORPONOK– I'm super excited for this one, literally salivating for a Cyber Changer version of this Scorponok.

TRA CYBERWORLD CC BUMBLEBEE, TRA CYBERWORLD CC CHEETOR, TRA CYBERWORLD CC OPTIMUS PRIME, TRA CYBERWORLD CC ELITA-1, TRA CYBERWORLD CC MEGATRON– Not surprising. Hopefully, we'll get a fun new mold or at least some interesting repaints.

TRA CYBERWORLD ULTIMATE GRIMLOCK 2 – The “2” leads me to think this is another fun repaint, but I'm still hoping for a new toy.

TRA CYBERWORLD CYBER ATTACK BUMBLEBEE – I'm pretty interested in what fun new form a Cyber Attack Bumblebee could take after the cool dinosaurs and pirate ships from Energon Surge.

TRA CYBERWORLD CYBER ATTACK GRIMLOCK – This one has me very interested, as so far the Cyber Attack toys have featured some fun alt modes. Will we get a new beast mode for Grimlock?

TRA CYBERWORLD COMBINER BUMBLEBEE, TRA CYBERWORLD COMBINER VOLCANIUS – Part of me wonders if these will be retools of the combiner toys from Robots in Disguise (2015) and Cyberverse, but I'm interested in Cyberworld combiners altogether. If they are retools, I guess it's a good thing I didn't get the originals. However, fingers crossed for something really neat!

The Weekend (As reported from my phone Monday morning)-

I had a pretty great weekend. I had actually taken Friday off leading to a trip to Spirit and Full Circle Toys. The Mrs and I completed our weekend shopping leading to a weekend at home where we got some things around the house done and a great dinner at Outback Steakhouse Saturday night. It was a pretty relaxing weekend, which is just what I needed. As for toys, I picked up a few items of interest. At Full Circle Toys, I picked up the clear Blokees Unicron planet mode kit, the Blokees Ark kit, a blind MTMTE Galaxy Version and Batman Defender Version. The MTMTE kit turned out to be Brainstorm and the Batman was the 2022 version. A later stop by Ross resulted in the Diaclone colors ReAction Devastator. As we're getting closer to Christmas, my toy pick ups each weekend will naturally slow down, but that doesn't mean posting here won't!

Wrecker Hook [RobotMasters]

I've been reorganizing my storage space recently, which has had me looking through a lot of my older toys. Like last week, it's inspired me to talk about one of note here.

I've mentioned Transformers RobotMasters on more than one occasion here. It was a line Takara put out in the mid-2000s that featured a mixture of older and newer molds as Transformers characters from multiple timelines, with both new and old characters gathered together to battle.

The line was announced shortly before OTFCC 2004, and several dealers had the first wave in stock. I was quite enamored with it myself, and the bulk of my convention buying was that first wave, aside from only getting the DVD version of Convoy over the standard release.

Over its time, I managed to get the bulk of the line, and RobotMasters is still one of the higher points in Transformers for me.

One of the returning characters in the line is Wrecker Hook, who we in the States know as Tow-Line.

Instead of the good-natured Autobot we're all used to, Wrecker Hook has lost his memory and is now sided with the Decepticons!

During this time, he actually becomes a better mechanic and finds friendship with Decepticon Wingstun.

Aside from the allegiance change, the biggest change is his deco. Instead of the bright green tow truck last seen in Transformers Car Robots/Robots in Disguise, Wrecker Hook now sports a completely badass black and red color scheme decked out in rockabilly flames!

In addition to his trademark "Aiming Shot," which is formed from his truck mode's grill, he also has the "Boost Hammer" weapon, which is a translucent green morning star type melee weapon.

Several RobotMasters weapons would come with additional weapons like this that could be combined together to form new weapons, similar to the ones in Transformers SuperLink/Energon, which was being released at the time.

All things considered, Wrecker Hook went through a lot of positive changes after joining the Decepticons.

I'm not sure how he went back to the Autobots, but he's his old self again in the Legends World manga.

Wrecker Hook uses the same toy mold as Wrecker Hook/Tow-Line did before in Car Robots/Robots in Disguise. Itself is a reuse of the mold used for Hoist and Hubcap in Transformers Machine Wars.

The mold was originally developed for Transformers Generation 2 and went unused until Machine Wars.

Originally sold as a Basic Class, a size class that sadly no longer exists, it's a smaller toy that features a pleasant amount of articulation for the time and auto-transforms.

By moving the tow truck's hook, Wrecker Hook's body will fold into itself as his chest moves out to form the truck cab. Make sure his arms and legs go into place properly, and then snap the hook into its spot to lock him in place.

The rifle folds up into the front of the truck and forms the grill, while you can either sit the Boost Hammer to the side or plug it into his fist in the bed area.

The flame deco really pops more in truck mode than you'd think, leading to an old nickname I gave it back in the day:

"Satan's Tow Truck."

Compared to today's toys, he probably seems pretty simplistic. Maybe comparable to a Cyber Changer from Transformers Cyberworld, if a bit bigger and with nicer paint.

But to be honest, I can't say a single bad thing about him.

I love this toy.

He looks amazing, and I find him endlessly fun.

RobotMasters was a particularly great Transformers line that had fun new toy molds and managed to make great older ones even better.

How can you not love that?

Weekly Update 10/12/26 — Rebellion Looks Good on You

Monday has reared its ugly head again, Zone Base readers, and it looks like the perfect time for another week of robots, monsters, and misadventure!

We're waist deep in pumpkin-spiced mayhem as the annual Halloween party is entering the main event. It's been another fun Halloween season, so let's keep going and make it another one for the books.

Thousands of you read Zone Base daily, and that's without the shameless shenanigans those big sites pull. The TikTok and Instagram project has been slowly growing, and more and more people are seeing the fun side content I've been publishing over there.

And all without paying for views like those big-name sellouts!

Please like and follow so we can keep growing this community together and take back fandom for ourselves!

Like I said, it's Halloween, which is like WrestleMania... the Super Bowl... the main event of Zone Base!

Wait, I already used that analogy earlier.

It's super flattering to see the extra readers I get each year who just want to go trick-or-treating with me. Let's continue to throw our horns in the air and flip our middle fingers to those who just don't get it!

Transformers-

Speaking of capitalizing off our interests, NYCC 2026 has been going on, and with it comes a slew of new toys soon to empty our bank accounts.

You've probably found your social media impossible to use thanks to all the clickbait news being shared, just like I have, but I'd like to point out a few of the things I've seen that have grabbed my interest.

In Generations, there's a repaint of Onyx Prime that I'm absolutely sold on. It's blue and is meant to represent The Deceiver from the IDW comics (I think that's where that came from), but frankly, I just really liked that toy and think it looks fabulous in blue.

There's also a new Machine Wars Starscream toy getting released that made me make audible noises of excitement when I first saw it.

I say it like that because I can't fully explain the sound I made. It's beyond comprehension, but if your dog suddenly started howling... that's probably my fault.

Then there's the new Walmart-exclusive Bugbite and Exhaust. These are part of their retro-carded series and look absolutely incredible. And I am absolutely ecstatic for that cassette set!

I must have them!

They're so pretty!

Also, it's been reported that both Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay are in talks to be brought back into the Transformers live-action movies.

It's hard to deny the power Spielberg brings, and one can only hope his involvement is a good thing. But let's not forget, Bumblebee not talking was his idea.

Michael Bay is a weird one, as his movies have developed a reputation for *ahem* their quality. However, they also make a ton of money, which means people were watching them regardless.

I mean, there's literally one always playing on a FAST app channel, still making money, still being watched. Why do you think they keep making those movie-based Studio Series toys?

It's hard to be too critical, because I'm going to see the movie and buy a copy of it.

Hell, I legitimately like the 2007 and Dark of the Moon movies.

Problems? Yeah, they have them.

What doesn't?

The Weekend As reported from my phone Monday morning while eating breakfast-

This weekend was pretty busy. The Mrs and I stayed out almost the entire time doing some shopping. Visits to Walmart, Target, Ross, and TJ Maxx were made with various things bought. I hoped to find some of the Yolopark Transformers models that have been allegedly showing up at Ross stores, but nothing at mine yet. I actually need to order the Yolopark Transformers Mini wave 3, but am still admittedly a little burned from my clear Hound and Acree from wave 2 being shipped with missing and wrong parts with the multiple customer service emails being completely ignored. That and I won one of their social media giveaways in January and they just never sent it. Doesn't make someone super excited to buy more of their products, but whatever I guess. Companies aren't your friends, and things like this happen. Regardless, I still want their kits so I guess it didn't completely sour me on them, just turned me off a little. I've never had a bad experience with Blokees or Flame Toys, just saying.

We actually spent almost the entirety of Sunday at Costco stocking up for the next few months of groceries in an attempt to lower our weekly grocery costs as those companies just keep gouging the crap out of everything. It was fun, but man, as much as I enjoy Costco trips, that was a lot of walking! Still, a lot of good things were purchased to keep us fed for quite some time. I even got a fun tray of rice balls that I plan to eat for the next few days. We topped off Sunday with a fun take out dinner from Olive Garden Sunday night and even got some fun Halloween donuts from Donut Worry that we've enjoyed all weekend. I managed to get in some quality time playing Heretic, because some games I'll never get tired of.

I mainly purchased needs over wants this weekend, and while I'm sure you're potentially fascinated about my new pants, I did get quite a bit of toys that are on subject for this site.

I ordered a case of Blokees Transformers Wheels Series 4 as well as the new Wheels Motormaster kit that should show up soon. In addition picked up a Transformers the Movie ReAction blind box and 2 Godzilla Scramble blond boxes from Target. Target had a large blind box section now that the Mrs and I enjoy quite a bit! I got an Optimus Prime from the ReAction box, which has lovely chrome paint and battle damage.

The 2 Scramble eggs yielded in Zebra and Jaguar deco Godzilla figures! While at TJ Max, I checked their growing toy section (Christmas is right around the corner) and found a Transformers Cyberworld Energon Surge Off-road Optimus Prime! He was standard retail, but that's one more I needed for my all of Cyberworld quest. Just need one more Cyber Changer and then time to focus on the larger figures.

At Walmart I picked up Transformers Age of the Primes Joyride, something that made me super happy to find as I sure do love Powermasters! It was pretty awesome to see his colors on the shelf, he's so pretty! I forgot to mention the tiny bat mini figure I picked up fron Target's dollars spot, I think he's going on my desk at work.

Squawkbox (Squawktalk and Beastbox) [The Transformers/Mini Cassettes]

@robfromzonebase Squakbox (Squaktalk and Beastbox) [The Transformers/Mini Cassette] #zonebase #transformers #decepticons #toys #g1 ♬ Maniac - Carpenter Brut

I've been organizing my new storage space lately, which has had me wanting to look through boxes at some of my older toys.

Which made me wonder...

Why don't I talk about those more here?

When it comes to the G1 Mini Cassettes, everyone (myself included) thinks about Ravage, Laserbeak, Rumble, and Frenzy first, with the rest following behind. As neat as the original batch are, the later ones tend to be really interesting.

That brings us to two of my favorites of the cassettes, Squawktalk and Beastbox!

Squawktalk's robot mode is allegedly a parrot, from what I've always heard, and he's also a completely new design rather than a repaint of Buzzsaw or Laserbeak.

It's actually a really sharp-looking design.

To be honest, you could have told me he was supposed to be any other bird than a parrot and I'd believe you. I'm inclined to believe they assigned him to be a parrot based on the name rather than the design.

The design itself?

A pretty threatening-looking bird robot with big-ass wings.

Takara designated him an eagle, which is a lot more fitting. He's cast in an awesome aqua-blue-ish color, and the whole thing just works. It's a cool-looking robot toy that somehow manages to make a cassette-sized bird look pretty damn imposing.

For a change, I'm about to talk about a Beastbox toy that wasn't made by 52TOYS.

The name Beastbox originally hails from Transformers, specifically this guy, Beastbox, whose robot mode is a gorilla!

I've always specifically loved his look. There's just something about the way the gorilla design comes from a flat cassette while still fitting perfectly with the aesthetics of the era. He's cast in that wonderful purple that several post-movie Decepticons came in, which just tops off the entire thing.

I remember being a kid and seeing him in the pack-in toy booklets and just thinking he looked awesome.

I got the toys we're looking at today while I was in college and was so happy to finally have this awesome purple gorilla guy.

"Hey Rob, I thought you said you were pretty broke in college."

I was.

Before the live-action movies, you could get older Transformers toys for pretty cheap, usually cheaper than the new ones at stores. Back then, they were pretty dismissed by most of the "serious" fan outlets like comic shops.

Another thing that makes these two special is that they combine to form Squawkbox, a pretty neat-looking robot that, despite being formed from two completely different animal-based robots, doesn't really show it.

The Autobots also had a cassette combiner, Slamdance, whose combined robot is pretty nice as well, but the individual modes don't impress me as much as these two do.

I guess it's just more impressive when a freaking gorilla and a bird with big-ass wings make a robot that doesn't look like it's made from either.

Another thing I enjoy is how Beastbox's Compression Cannons combine with Squawktalk's High Decibel Sonic Boomers to form big guns that mount on his arms in a very aesthetically pleasing way.

Thanks to their design, there's no specific order for this, so you can just stick whichever gun with whatever other gun and it'll work.

There's also a pleasant amount of articulation for the team, more than you'd realistically expect from a toy of this era.

Considering how little I harp on articulation, the fact that I bring it up should say something.

Overall, this is a fantastic toy all together.

The Transformers Mini Cassettes have always been beloved for good reason. It's a genius toy gimmick that never gets old. Even now, you can explain Soundwave (or Blaster) and the cassettes to someone, and they'll make that undeniable "whoah" face, even if they don't actually say it.

It's just neat!

Not to mention, these two just look great, even compared to modern toys and engineering.

I do wish they got more attention, because they really are on the higher level of the original Generation One Transformers toys.

Weekly Update 10/5/26 — Put Out Your Pumpkins

It sure is Monday yet again, Zone Base readers, and time for another week of robots, monsters, and misadventure!

It's October and officially Halloween time for the rest of the world. We've been going steady for the past two months, but now it's time for the main event!

You can be sure that the annual assault of Pumpkin Spice Mayhem isn't going to let up, and rest uneasy knowing that it's going into overdrive!

As usual, I've got a fun week planned for the thousands of you that read every day. The TikTok and Instagram project are going well, with views and likes steadily climbing. I really hope more of you choose to follow me over there, as I'm really trying to grow those sites as a fun side to the main site.

Zone Base has never been big on social media, but really, I just want to use it to share things with my readers like I do here. It's pretty fun!

Thank you all for reading and supporting Zone Base. As usual, my thoughts on some things are following, as well as my poorly written weekly update!

Don't forget to be excellent to each other!

For the record, I misspelled "usual" so badly that spellcheck thought I was saying something completely different, and every attempt to correct myself was even worse.

What the hell, self?

Transformers-

There's been a scattering of news recently, but the thing that I'd like to talk about most right now is the recent Generations release leaks.

Of course, these are technically rumors, but they're from the source on TFW2005 that's always right, so they're most likely true aside from small things changing along the way. Like the Energon Monsters planned for Legacy that never materialized, but instead resulted in a few Decepticon Pretender homages.

Well, following the whole "Studio Series is for media adaptations, Generations is more experimental" plan, it looks like Age of the Primes will be coming to an end in 2027 and leading the way to the Megatron Rising series in Generations.

From what I gather, the storyline takes place after the end of the Great War, with the Autobots victorious.

However, they're corrupted and evil now.

So basically like Shattered Glass, but not specifically Shattered Glass.

I'm guessing that means more traditional colors on the corrupted Autobots than Shattered Glass featured. I'm hoping that means the Corrupted Autobots are more sinister-looking, as that could be pretty fun.

In response to the Corrupted Autobots, Megatron is joined by other Megatrons and Transformers from alternate dimensions to rise up against them.

While multiversal stories have definitely worn themselves out in almost all recent media, this is actually a pretty nice framing story. Generations tends to be updates of characters from various lines anyway, so the story bits basically work as a framing device for throwing all kinds of crazy versions of Transformers together.

And this looks like the storyline toys might be pretty interesting, as there looks to be an all-Megatron combiner and a Leader Class Scorponok.

What I'm most excited for is a Deluxe G2 Gobots Megatron and an Armada Demolisher that look to be coming.

Hopefully more G2 Gobots and RID Spychangers are released. I'd prefer something like Core Class or Cyber Changers for these guys (they were always small! ) but modern Deluxe Class versions of these designs might be pretty great!

The Weekend (as written on my phone while eating breakfast)-

My weekend was just right. Saturday, the Mrs and I got our weekly shopping in and enjoyed a viewing of The Backrooms while enjoying some pizza. Sunday turned out to be quite rainy and while it's been cooling down, was the first autmn day that actually felt like autumn this year. I decorated the front yard for Halloween, which was a lot of fun. At our old place, our front yard was bigger than the back, while it's the reverse at our new home.

So we've taken to a little less yard decorations (the inside is packed). It felt a little odd after years of holiday decorating being a pretty big ordeal, but I'm still happy with how it all turned out. I spent a little time organizing the garage before enjoying a barbecue dinner the Mrs had made in the crockpot. Perfect for a chilly rainy day. I finally ordered the new Blokees Defender Version case this weekend with plans on ordering the new Wheels case next weekend. I can't wait to blog about some of the kits here! Battlestars!

Optimus Prime [Big Figs]

So, I might have bought something dumb.

Part of the Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary theatrical run included various merchandise. Because, that's kinda the point of why these companies make these things. However, one of the coolest items is the subject of today's post, a Target Exclusive Big Figs Optimus Prime by Jakks Pacific.

Big Figs and other brands like it are massive action figures, generally around 18" to 48" tall. For a while there, they were everywhere. I don't think it was possible to walk into a Toys R Us without walking down an aisle and finding a small gathering of them.

I haven't seen them in a while, but they seem to have become more of an online item lately, as I just don't see them in person as often as I used to. Apparently they're still pretty popular, though, and I get it.

There's nothing like a giant-ass figure of a character you like.

That's why I got this one, a 30" Optimus Prime Big Figs tied into the Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary and sold exclusively at Target stores in the states (it's been appearing at Costco in Japan recently).

He's apparently pretty popular, as stores have been having a hard time keeping him in stock and the thing is getting resold for less-than-favorable prices by resellers. Fortunately, on a whim, the Mrs. was checking the Target app for some cat food for a pickup order and found one in stock for delivery only.

So we jumped at the chance because that's what you have to do in these instances.

Arriving a few days before my viewing of the movie in theaters, Optimus Prime is a lot bigger than I realized.

Like... I knew he was 30 inches.

But the number "30 inches" on your phone screen doesn't really register until he's standing in your living room, mingling with the Halloween blow molds at our fireplace.

Wow...

There's truth in the name. That's a Big Fig.

I feel like I have to say this now, because there's always that one person who's going to ask. And I get it. The line is named Transformers. There are expectations.

However, no, he doesn't transform.

You're not getting a 30" action figure that turns into a truck for thirty-five dollars. You can hardly get a standard Deluxe Class Transformer for that now.

It's probably also worth noting that articulation is pretty limited. He's got shoulders, elbows, and a head. It looks like his wrists swivel, but to be honest, I haven't tried. There's no leg articulation, though I've seen folks in groups modify theirs to allow for it.

Considering how heavy he is, about six pounds, I wonder just how floppy of a mess those Primes are now.

I've been seeing the Shogun Warrior/Jumbo toy guys go nuts over this. Which is to be expected, because this is right up their alley. But he doesn't really have that Shogun Warrior look.

This looks like a big-ass Optimus Prime that you'd expect to see in standard-sized retail packaging.

I've heard more than one person claim that his sculpt is almost identical to the Leader Class Studio Series 86 Optimus Prime toy. Both are intended to look like Optimus as he appears in the 1986 movie, so no surprise there.

It is possible that CAD files were shared, or that one of those Studio Series toys was scanned to make an STL file from. I'm not sure if that's the case or it's just a coincidence.

But it's safe to say this looks like who it's supposed to.

Which is part of the point.

The other part is that it be big as hell.

Which it is.

Optimus doesn't come with any accessories, but I've been seeing folks 3D-print guns and Energy Axes for theirs. That looks pretty fun. I hope to get into 3D printing soon, and even though I want to focus on smaller projects, I can see how rewarding it would be to deck this guy out with stuff.

Personally, I kinda want to make a Tommy Kennedy to reenact the live-action segments from Season 5.

Really, despite being just a big silly toy, this thing is causing so many fans to have a lot of fun. They're parading it around social media, pretending it's their new child, making things for it, and just generally enjoying their big silly robot toy.

Frankly, it feels like the perfect thing to go along with the 40th Anniversary showings.

I've been jokingly calling it this big dumb thing, when the truth is...

I love it.

In buying something dumb, I got something awesome.

Weekly Update 9/28/26 — Yo Joelanta!

It's Monday again, Zone Base readers, and this weekend I attended Joelanta 2026 to host the Transformers panel!

I haven't been to a Joelanta since it was split away from Toylanta, so it was really nice to attend one again. Joelanta serves as Toylanta's fall convention, with Joelanta, Toylanta, and Rangerstop and Pop all being part of the same family of conventions run by Good Journey LLC.

As normal, my report from the show will be written below on my phone as I eat breakfast Monday morning. So once again, please forgive any grammatical weirdness that may result from me trying to turn convention brain into coherent sentences before I've finished my first meal of the day.

Please share the site with your friends, and please follow Zone Base on TikTok and Instagram, which are quickly becoming nice companions to the main site. I'd love to see them grow.

Thank you all for reading Zone Base, and as always, be excellent to each other.

Joelanta 2026-

I was only attending Sunday, which made for a great break after spending Saturday helping my mother finish moving. I tore myself away from looking at pics from All Hail Cybertron 24 while eating breakfast and headed to the con center stopping by the ATM for a little cash. Most dealers take cards and Venmo at these things now, but alot are still old fashioned, and those are usually gold mines. Being Sunday morning, I made the drive in pretty good time and looked around a little before panel time. Dusty had gotten there before me and we chatted a bit before the panel started. Sunday panels are lightly attended half the time, but we had an awesome group and even went over time just chatting. The group even went outside the panel room to talk even more afterwards, talk about a fun time!

Dusty left shortly after and I walked around the dealers room chatting with folks and handing out Zone Base stickers. I wish I'd had time to make some more pins in time for the show, but oh well. I'll definitely have more made by Toylanta and maybe even a few more cool things to hand out if everything goes according to plan. It was great to see Matt and Marty as always. Riot Press was there and I was tempted to get another Last Seeker figure. The alternate colors are really sharp, but I can never decide on one. He has a Voltron colored one on display at every con, but it's a print that's not for sale unfortunately. By Toylanta I'll decide between the desert camo and white one. They've got alternate heads from the Euro G1 version I've got and as nice as the black one looks, it has the same head.

I eventually picked up a Gobots Dozer for $5 that was pretty beaten up, but good for tge price. Another guy had a Hans Cuff I was tempted in, but it was just a little too beaten up for $15. At $10 I would have grabbed it. I was plased to see Rock Lords returning to decent prices as they've been really jumping in price more recently, unfortunately I didn't see any ones I needed. There were lots of awesome Transformers for sale ranging from premium priced vintage bots and newer sets and a solud range of more recent toys at respectful prices. Though aside from a few Gibits for the Mrs, I didn't buy anything else. I really just enjoyed the atmosphere and didn't find myself shopping. Just enjoying the show and exercise from walking around. I did spend some time at the Southern Fried Gaming Expo area as usual and spent some time playing a Miner 69 clone on a Atari XEGS they had set up. They were giving away drawstring bags so hurray free swag! I'd been actually wanting a new one, so just in time.

It was a fun time and great to see Brett and the Good Journey crew again. Much thanks to them for inviting me out again for another con. Between Toylanta, Rangerstop and Pop, and Joelanta. 2026 has been a solid set of conventions they've run that I've enjoyed. Of course I always enjoy them, but we're talking this year! I can't wait for Toylanta in April! However it's time to get back to the real world and enjoying more pics from All Hail Cybertron 24. Thanks to thousands of you who read Zone Base every day. It's really flattering to see so many of you joining me on enjoying our hobbies together.

Springer (Car and Attack Helicopter) [Wheels CO2 & CO3 Wreck 'n Rule 2 & 3]

@robfromzonebase Springer (helicopter and car) [Transformers Blokees Wheels CO2 & CO3 [Wreck 'n Rule 1 & 2] #zonebase #transformers #blokees #blokeestransformers #blindbox ♬ Witching Hour - NECRONOMIDOL

When it comes to my name, people automatically assume it's a screen name or ask if I'm related to Jerry.

Ironically, I'm related to a Jerry, yeah—the guy on TV.

No, not that one. The guy who robbed a gas station.

Either way, the answer is no, and it just happens to be a slightly common name. For example, an artist on the original Transformers comic was named Frank Springer. However, Springer allegedly wasn't named after him either.

I say allegedly because the name apparently comes from his special ability to jump or his tendency to jump into battle. Transformers are more than meets the eye, and getting "Springer" from that is a pretty big leap.

I'm guessing Frank pissed someone petty off somehow.

In 1986, Springer made his big-screen debut in Transformers: The Movie. I was there opening weekend, drinking my cherry ICEE next to my Mom, who kept nudging me with a smile every time they said his name. My brother was sitting with a kid from the bus who'd apparently been there all day watching every showing.

To this day, I wonder if I know him now as an adult fan.

This past weekend, like many of you, I went to see the 40th anniversary showing at the theater. This time without the cherry ICEE, because I'm older now and that's too much sugar.

In case it isn't completely obvious, this post is my way of observing the occasion.

Springer's Wheels releases were spread between the two different cases in the Wreck 'n Rule series, with the car appearing in Part 1 and the attack helicopter in Part 2. Both also have special editions, the Hologram and Titanium versions, in addition to the standard releases.

Both of mine are the standard editions, which I'm perfectly fine with. Though those Hologram versions are mighty neat looking.

Springer's Wheels kits are based on his appearance in IDW's Last Stand of the Wreckers. The car looks a bit different from his traditional design, while the attack helicopter isn't too far removed from what we're used to seeing.

Blokees Wheels are specifically sharp-looking kits, and Springer definitely falls into that category. Both kits use that super-satisfying compound known as Solidex, and it just brings them both to another level.

Seriously, Blokees. Just make the entire thing out of the stuff. I love it.

The combination of the design, Solidex, and the smaller scale makes these completed kits feel like a high-caliber product. Blokees Wheels almost feel like a more sophisticated model kit.

Does that make sense?

I had absolutely no problem assembling the car. None.

The attack helicopter gave me some trouble, though. A lot of that had to do with my ongoing issues with reading the instructions clearly. The main body piece that everything assembles out from? I had it backwards for what felt like forever while trying to decipher what I was supposed to be doing and what I was doing wrong.

I enjoy the helicopter blades resembling swords. I don't recall if they did this in Last Stand of the Wreckers, but since the helicopter blades normally become his sword, it was a nice touch.

Another nice touch is that the Wreckers Hammer that comes with Cosmos in Wreck 'n Rule Part 1 can also be mounted on the car.

Overall, these are just neat kits, even if I had a little trouble assembling the attack helicopter. Like I've said a few times before, I'm surprised by just how much I'm enjoying these Wheels kits.

They're just really freaking neat, you know?

Weekly Update 9/21/26 — Still Got the Touch

It's Monday yet again Zone Base readers, thank you all for joining me again for another week of robots, monsters, and misadventure!

Like many of you, this weekend I went to see the 40th Anniversary showing of Transformers: The Movie at my local theater. It was nice to see it on the big screen again and celebrate the occasion. Of course, I'm writing this in advance, and below is the weekend update written on my phone Monday morning, hence the grammatical shift.

Because apparently this is what happens when I try to write a blog post before I've fully become a functioning human being for the day.

Despite Zone Base getting thousands of views a day, it's always been something of a ghost town on social media. I mean, I am there, and I even made a Facebook page just to share the site in groups. However, it's just never been a big social media destination.

While I'm definitely not trying to be an influencer, I'm trying to get Zone Base more established on TikTok and Instagram and use those resources as part of the site. My videos have been getting increasingly more views on TikTok, which is awesome, and I'd like to keep growing those accounts. There's a lot of stuff I post there that doesn't necessarily get covered here, so I think of them as another part of Zone Base rather than completely separate things.

If you could, please like and follow me on TikTok and Instagram for more site content that doesn't get posted here. I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you all for supporting Zone Base. Please share it with your friends, and as always, be excellent to each other.

Now, let's get to the weekend!

The Weekend (via poorly written cell phone entry)

My viewing of TFTM was a really good time. I'd been seeing where Shaw Theaters in partnership with Yolopark had been turning their showings into little events and honestly I'm jealous! My theaters didn't even have posters for their showings, talk about slack ass! Regardless, the movie was excellent as always and it was great seeing it on the big screen again. The tribute to Peter Cullen at the beginning was a nice touch and the additional short Transformers: Awakenings was fun to watch even if the plot/message felt a bit... bad fan fic? I dunno, guess I expected more than I should have on that one. Still, like the 40th Anniversary theatrical event in 2024, I really enjoyed myself. This is tge type of thing I'd love to happen more often. It's nice to have local things for fans to enjoy without having to go out of their way at great expense like conventions in more recent years. Man, if only Yolopark had set up in my theater.

The rest of the weekend was spent helping my mom move. I swear/hope the word move leaves my vocabulary soon and I can find leasure time again. I did manage to watch the newest episodes of Ultraman Teo and Kamen Rider My-Th and get in a little more time in the game of Gargoyle's Quest I've been enjoying for the Halloween season. I'm hoping to get more time soon to organize my toy space as I've got plans for it that I'm really excited about! Didn't really get any toys this weekend. Well, the Mrs surprised me with the last 2 Godzilla x Hello Kitty toys I'd needed that she got from trading groups. The Dragonzord Kickstarter finished up, so I can look forward to that in May. My Big Figs Optimus Prime came in and I love it! Look forward to a post on that in the future. Next weekend I'll be hosting a Transformers panel at Joelanta and am really excited about it. I haven't been since Toylanta was split from Joelanta and it'll be nice to go again. Well, next weeks report will be full of talk about that. Until then, it's time to get this week started!

Ratchet and Bumblebee [Cyberworld Energon Surge/Armored Cyber Changers]

Last year when I was writing about "season 1" of Cyberworld toys, I regularly took note of what felt like a missing gimmick with all the Cyber Changers having multiple ports. I was also never super fond of the Armored Cyber Changers' "armored" parts, which were essentially larger Mech Tech-style weapons. I didn't hate them, but I rarely felt like they actually fit the toys.

Now, with the new Energon Surge figures, the phantom gimmick and the Armored Cyber Changers are here, and it's awesome.

Like with the new Armored Cyber Changer Megatron we looked at a little bit back, the gimmick is built into the new Energon Surge Armored Cyber Changers Ratchet and Bumblebee, and it just makes me love Armored Cyber Changers instead of simply accepting them as a way to mark up a toy's price. Not to mention, now under the Energon Surge sub-line, the Cyber Changers have wonderful translucent plastic parts that look absolutely amazing.

The colorful clear plastic, of course, reminds me of Microman/Micronauts, and the new armored parts really make me think of 2000s Microman toys. Of course, being Cyber Changers, the articulation isn't anywhere near as extensive, but it's impossible for me not to make that comparison.

I could also make a comparison to the energy weapons from Transformers Energon, and guys... I love this type of gimmick. Translucent plastic looks amazing, even on more simple figures like these.

Bumblebee is a recolor of the first Armored Cyber Changer Bumblebee we've already talked about here. This version feels more like an upgrade, as those new translucent blue parts just pop on the mold, looking a million times better than the original.

His new Energon Surge armor parts include two blade blaster style weapons, two energy stinger style parts, and a large shield/backpack piece. These can be used in multiple ways. I've leaned into using the large piece more as a jetpack than a shield, with the stinger parts as armor and the blade blasters as guns... unless he needs to cut a fool.

The blade blasters can become wings as well, making me use the parts similarly to Macross booster parts for his car mode. It's a modular design, so you can really get creative with it.

It's worth noting that you can combine these parts with the ones from other toys.

Go nuts.

Ratchet is a new mold and a really fun one at that. Instead of changing into his traditional ambulance alt mode, Ratchet converts into a rescue helicopter. That's a neat little touch of variety that gives Ratchet a more exciting look.

The chevron on his helmet is orange, which contrasts nicely with the white and translucent blue that makes up the majority of him. It makes me think of the Powerlinks Red Alert toy from Armada, which has always been a deco I've liked.

Part of me wonders—and hopes—this toy will get more green in the future for a Cyberworld version of Medix.

Ratchet's Armored parts actually work nicely with his helicopter mode, forming jet boosters and rocket pods. Additionally, there are two large bladed bits that look cool, and now that I think of it, they probably would have made more sense if I'd plugged them into the rear section of the helicopter rather than making wings with them.

Oh well.

This is seemingly an all-new mold and engineering, so I wonder where it'll resurface? The bits that the helicopter's blades are connected to can be detached, and part of me finds that base body similar enough to a motorcycle without wheels.

As creative as these designers have been with the shared engineering, I'm looking forward to something unexpected.

Part of me can't help but compare the Energon Surge armor parts to the upgrades your ship gets in a shooter game. Like, Ratchet is flying into action and, just because Cyberworld is a video game, he's blasting little floating capsules and adding onto his firepower. In robot mode, the armored bits can make for some nicely dramatic... armor. They can be held as well as plugged in, so get creative. Those big-ass blades, though, make for some sharp ornamentation for Ratchet, giving him some serious super robot energy.

It's really awesome for me to see the Armored Cyber Changers stepping up and bringing that gimmick that the line always felt designed for into Cyberworld. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Cyber Changers feel like the continuation of the Beast Alliance toys that I had such a good time with a few years ago, and it's good to see something like a line-wide gimmick.

I'm hopeful they continue with more fun things like this, or even expand it with even more cool stuff.

Because apparently all these ports were just waiting for someone to finally say, "You know what? Let's put some crazy shit in there."

And I'm absolutely here for it.

Weekly Update 9/14/26: It won't be over in five minutes

It's Monday again, Zone Base readers, and time for another week of robots, monsters, and misadventure! We're back from last week's holiday weekend and well into Halloween!

Transformers

While the Transformers world is currently rotating around the 40th anniversary showings of the 1986 Transformers movie, there's news of several fun tie-in products that look pretty damn cool. New blind-box ReAction figures by Super7, that way-cool 30" Optimus Prime by BigFig, various tumblers, and other neat items—the list goes on.

I plan to take in a viewing of the film myself. Like I've said too many times before, I was there opening weekend in 1986. You know what that makes me?

Old.

In other news, the newest Mattel Creations Hot Wheels Transformers collaboration was announced: Bumblebee! I've said time and time again that I'm convinced someone at Plex or Bandai is shadow-working on these Hot Wheels collaborations. The truth is, they're designed by Mattel and Hasbro/Takara Tomy.

The reason they have that Machine Robo feel is, like with Plex or Bandai, the designers are keeping the dimensions of the car and working around it instead of stretching things out to fit a robot.

Still, I see that Bumblebee and I envision an alternate reality where Transformers were sourced from Bandai toys and not Hasbro.

Humor me.

Godzilla / Tokusatsu

The trailer for Godzilla: Minus Zero is making waves and for good reason—it looks amazing! While the sequel looks to follow Minus One's story, it also looks like Ghidorah is joining in, making for an exciting movie. I love how Minus One was essentially a remake of the original Godzilla movie, with this new movie continuing the monsters down a familiar path.

The Dragonzord Kickstarter has been successfully funded and is heading into stretch goals that will include more goodies in the toy box. One of the goals was a White Ranger micro figure to be included alongside a Green Ranger, and that's where my mind checked out after it hit that goal.

So I guess I'm getting more stickers with my tiny Rangers?

I'm sadly adjusting to Zeztz ending while still hoping for a new episode. Damn, I really loved that show. However, Kamen Rider My-Th has begun airing, and I do enjoy it so far. It's such a radical departure from the show before it that I'm having a hard time letting go and... kinda refuse to.

Part of me sees Zeztz in the same light as shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, where they stick with you long after they end. My-Th, however, is a pretty fun series so far, and I'm enjoying all the different animal-themed Riders in a slightly more... Victorian? flavored setting.

Ultraman Teo continues to be a fun ride, and I'm certainly enjoying Pucchi's involvement more now that he has been fighting alongside Teo. The show is pretty funny as well, and the kaiju look awesome.

I'm a few episodes behind on Omegahorn at this writing, but am still enjoying it more than I thought I would. I really hope Toei starts airing Project R.E.D. on their YouTube channel alongside Kamen Rider.

Weekend Report (as written on my phone Monday morning)

The weekend was pretty good if not over too fast. The Mrs. and I did some things around the house like enjoy dinner from Olive Garden and watch 1000lbs Sisters. I also started a new game of Gargoyle's Quest up while enjoying some ghost videos for some spooky fun. Sunday I finally put our patio furniture back together from the move. It's nice to have it all back after sitting unassembled since June. I started going through some boxes as part of organizing my storage space and slowly building myself a work area. Going through several boxes of older text books and magazines to donate to Goodwill I found several older fanzines and doujin work from my past. Of course those went in the keep boxes. It's going to take a few weekends to get the area in shape, but it'll be good to finally purge a lot of things that have been taking up space for far too long. Not my toys of course, but other assorted crap.

I didn't buy much, but what I bought this weekend was spacious! The Big Figs 30" Optimus Prime figure was ordered and should be here tomorrow and I picked up the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition Season 2 White Tigerzord! I've got to get that Thunder Megazord built! The Dragonzord Kickstarter will finish up this week as well, guess it's been a big ass robot toy kind of week. Well, thank you all for reading Zone Base. I've got to get my day started and get some things done. Please share the site with your friends and be excellent to each other!

SG Optimus Prime [Wheels CT02]

@robfromzonebase SG Optimus Prime [Transformers Blokees Wheels CT02] He comes with smoke stacks or a spoiler for the truck cab. #zonebase #transformers #blokees #blokeestransformers #shatteredglass ♬ Song 3 - BABYMETAL & Slaughter To Prevail

I've been meaning to assemble the newest Blokees Wheels CT kit for a few weeks now. For one reason or another, the more involved kits have been getting pushed to the side. Well, now that a little more time is finally loosening up, I'm slowly getting some of that precious hobby time back. I found myself adding CT02 to my Sunday build schedule instead of just sticking with quick-build kits.

CT02 is the Shattered Glass version of the standard Optimus Prime truck and trailer set, which was CT01. Obviously, it's a straight repaint, but that's kind of what's fun about this kit.

Evil versions of Optimus Prime are nothing new. There's Black Convoy or Nemesis Prime, Scourge from Robots in Disguise 2001, or even Clone Convoy and Gilthor, who go all the way back to the '80s. Evil versions of the hero are a pretty well-worn trope. The same goes for mirror universes. Almost every fictional universe has one.

One of the things that makes Shattered Glass stand out, however, is the alternate colors the characters received, and they are pretty fabulous. Optimus is a wonderful combination of black and purple, which any goth kid can tell you looks fabulous.

Now, to be fair, Optimus's trailer was black in G2. And that's part of what's fun about these color schemes. A lot of them are based on prior decos. For example, SG Starscream resembles the traditional Skyfire/Jetfire colors.

Optimus fortunately has an alt mode that looks great in almost any color, but purple really works for him. You don't see many purple tractor-trailers on the road, so it feels a little alien. Not to mention, the original Shattered Glass Optimus used the 2006 Classics Optimus Prime toy as its base, which was a slightly sleeker take on the classic cab-over-engine design of G1 Optimus.

The standard Blokees Wheels version of Optimus tends to be more in line with that 2006 toy, while the CT01 truck and trailer set allows for a more traditional-looking truck, with the spoiler being optional. The same is true with this version, though I went with the spoiler on my build because I honestly really like that Classics toy. In purple, paired with the black trailer, it just looks fabulous.

A nice difference between SG Optimus and your standard Prime is the placement of his Autobot symbols and other graphics. In late G1, through G2, and even into Machine Wars, you'd see things like enormous symbols on alt modes, various logos like "AUTOBOTS," symbols on windshields, and random sayings like "BIG STICK."

Various bits that, honestly, you'd see on cars around that same time frame.

I still remember a kid in high school with a white truck featuring matching purple splashes down the sides and the words "SPLASH AT YA!" across the windshield.

Which somehow was cooler than my beat-up Escort with mismatched fenders and band stickers.

Even though Shattered Glass isn't specifically G2, some of these decos have that same non-traditional energy, and these little wild touches really add to the overall look.

One thing I found very fun with CT01 was the ability to connect the Combat Deck robot to Roller. However, while I thought that was neat, I wasn't as inspired to do it because traditional G1 Optimus Prime didn't really use them that way.

HOWEVER, it's definitely something I could see Shattered Glass Optimus Prime doing.

Regular Optimus would send Roller to help find kids trapped in a mine. This Prime would send Roller to cave it in on them.

Not to mention, sending the Combat Deck robot on a mission just sounds so rad, doesn't it? Normally, it just sits around inside the trailer. I imagine it'd like something to do, and being paired up with Roller on little missions is just the way to get it out of the trailer and make it feel more productive.

I'd also like to think the two wouldn't get along.

Ah, the Sweet Smell of Manual Labor

It's Labor Day, Zone Base readers! A holiday meant to recognize the efforts of those who work, and I've been working my ass off lately, so this holiday break is arriving at just the right time.

I hope to spend some time working on a few kits and organizing my hobby space, while hopefully getting in a swim or two as well.

Being a holiday week—a much-needed holiday week—I hope you all can understand me taking a little break around the site and having a slightly lighter week. Of course, next week the full schedule will return.

Thank you all for reading Zone Base. It's a labor of love, and I appreciate every one of you taking time out of your busy days to support it. Please don't forget to share the site with others.

And as always... be excellent to each other.

Megatron [Cyberworld Energon Surge/ Armored Cyber Changer & Cyber Changer]

Today we have a tale of two Megatrons as we look at the two most recent Megatron figures in Transformers Cyberworld under the Energon Surge sub-line. This time we've got the all-new Armored Cyber Changer Megatron and a reissue of the excellent Bull Megatron Cyber Changer as an Energon Surge figure. Both are super cool and share a similar palette, which is appropriate.

Of course, I'll be spending more time with the Armored Cyber Changer. I've been giving the Energon Surge editions of prior Cyber Changers a look as part of my quest to cover all of Cyberworld, but obviously they don't need an entire post of their own.

In his Armored Cyber Changer debut, Megatron transforms from a more traditional version of himself into a drill tank. Apparently he shares engineering with Optimus Primal, which is something I didn't initially notice thanks to his arms, where the drill becomes his right arm. Looking at his core and torso, though... yeah, I see it now. That's pretty clever.

Cyber Changers are obviously really simple toys, so it's pretty neat seeing how they can reuse engineering so creatively. It gives their designs a modular feel. A lot of folks think a transformation needs to be super complex to have impressive engineering, when something simple can be just as impressive. They've managed to churn out a variety of toys with completely different alt modes using just a few basic skeletons to make them work. Neat.

Like I said, Megatron's right arm is the drill from the tank and even has elbow/wrist articulation (it's a little vague) in addition to the drill being able to spin. It's pretty neat. It's easy to compare a tank Megatron with his Generation 2 version, but this one is so unique that it's kind of its own thing. If anything, I'm a little reminded of the tank Megatron from the 2006 "Ultimate Battle" two-pack with Optimus Prime. That tank has a similar shape, and the robot also features a spinning arm weapon gimmick.

In robot mode, Megatron is nicely beefy, as someone who turns into a tank should be. That right arm with a giant drill makes him look a little crazy, too.

One thing I absolutely love about this toy is that it's an Armored Cyber Changer where the additional accessories are actually armor. Last year, when I was looking at the original batch of Cyber Changers, I kept saying how the multiple ports looked as if they were designed for some sort of gimmick. With prior Armored Cyber Changers, the "armored" part was essentially a giant Mech Tech-style weapon. Here, Megatron actually has armor for both robot and tank modes!

The armor pieces are made from a nice translucent purple that matches Megatron's body and look like a mixture of Energon shards and some form of energy armor. It looks neat in robot mode, but I really enjoy the way it looks on the tank. Thinking about it, if the toy were silver, it'd resemble the earlier live-action movie look for Megatron. There's even a gun that he can hold or plug into one of the many ports. This is a really fun toy, and it's awesome to finally see those ports getting utilized.

The Bull Megatron is the same toy I talked about before, and that's a good thing because it's a great figure. Definitely one of my favorite Cyber Changers and the toy that initially sold me on the line. I really like the new blue color used on this version in conjunction with the translucent purple. It's a nice new outfit, so to speak.

One thing about Cyberworld is that, despite their limited articulation, they remind me of Microman in the way the figures interact with the larger toys. Now that the Energon Surge toys are getting these translucent bodies, the comparison is even harder to ignore. I'm outright comparing them to '90s Microman, because regardless of the limited articulation, they visually match. Bull Megatron would make a fine Acrobeast!

Like I've said before, Cyber Changers are so much fun to collect and blog about. The new Megatron was an absolute treat to fiddle around with, while the Bull Megatron was like going on a new adventure with an old friend.

This mission of mine to blog the entirety of Cyberworld continues to be a great decision.
