He says that nothing frightens him, except when he looks in the mirror. He thinks that everything is a big joke and acts accordingly, even during battle. Goofy, irreverent, sometimes annoying... but a top-notch warrior. In robot mode, wields a vaporator which gassifies a target's fuel, leaving it inoperative. In creature mode, has indestructible tusks. Flies at 45 mph, can leap 3 miles at a time.

Pretty Mayhem 4 -The Spark Master

 

Summer fireworks season is still going on and with it our look at monster sparking Transformers. This week, we're taking a look at some monsters who aren't here to hurt you... unless you're a Decepticon. The Monsterbots! The Monsterbots are Autobots who turn into big scary fire breathing monsters. Released in 1987, these are some seriously cool toys. In Headmasters, they're mainly stationed on Planet Beast helping the Beastformers.

In more recent times they got new updated toys. Now with with the Titanmaster and Primemaster gimmicks that are modern updates of Headmasters and Powermasters, they fit more into the timeline that they were introduced in. Some of the Titanmasters are Beastformers even! Repugnus seemingly gets the most new toys over the years (it's impossible to ignore his excellent Cyberverse figure). However Doublecross/Twinferno has been getting some extra attention in more recent years. 

Summer is a fun time that can also be pretty scary sometimes. We've got one more look at sparking Transformers until the fireworks season is over. But don't worry, Spooky Summer won't be over for a while and we've got some more scary themed Transformers to help with the creepiness of the season. After all, we're getting into ghost story time.

Bios- Repugnus

No job is too disgusting to disgust me.

He has a personality as repellent as his looks -- been kicked out of the Autobots many times for insubordination only to be asked back since he's always willing to undertake missions too low-down and dirty for anyone else to consider. In robot mode, carries venom laser that slows cerebro impulses and paralyzes on impact. In creature mode, has infra-red and X-ray vision; can emit colors and stroboscopic effect with eyes. Claws contain chemical, electromagnetic and audio sensors; can rip through almost any substance.

Repugnus And His Gruesome Chomp

I had gotten Repugnus last month, but since I talked Whirl yesterday... I thought I'd just follow his lead. Repugnus is a damn treat. As you can see above in his monster mode... he's just adorable and wants to give you a hug. His clawed arms are decently articulated and by pushing the lever behind his head, you'll get a GRUESOME CHOMP! What the hell is that? It's his play feature frankly, but also it means those two tusks on the side of his mouth close.

As the norm for a Turbo Changer, transformation is simple making Repugnus's robot mode unfold from the monster form. He looks like his G1 toy quite a bit here, just a bit smaller. The arm articulation carries over here and it's a shame Repugnus doesn't have a gun or anything as he sure could pack one. He's a simple bot and that's part of where the fun is. With Turbo Changers the aneurysm from a piece of kibble blocking a basic joint needed is gone.

Simple is not a bad thing as he's chock full of character and charm. This is a cool toy and would fit right on in next to Whirl by your Genesis Mini while you work through that game of Streets of Rage 2. Perfect for fiddling with during a needed break after a drink from that ice cold beverage slowly saturating everything around it with moisture form the melting ice. Damn man, turn a fan on or something.

Monsterbots/Misadventure

There's something about Transformers that intend to disguise themselves by turning into something that's not common. Pretty sure there wasn't any dinosaurs walking around in 1985, though there likely could have been a UFO just flying around. After all they were aliens. Though by the post movie years when things got more space opera, you got more far out ideas like the Monsterbots. A group of Autobots who transformed into monsters.

The Monsterbots took up with the Beastformers/Battle Beasts and made a home on Planet Beast. As awesome as that is, part of me wishes they would have had more of a role in Masterforce as they fit the series tone better. I think so anyway, with things like Seacons and Pretenders battling Super Sentai style, I can't help but to thing they'd fit in as their monster modes would effectively be Zords.

I've always enjoyed how the advertising for said bots of monster played up their standing as in fact monsters. From the commercial showing them bursting from the lab of there creation, to print ads indicating their scariness, Hasbro wanted you to understand that these are monsters. I talked about the Halloween Horrorcons here before. But, something tells me, that somebody clearly always wanted scary robot toys behind the scenes. I'm not complaining either, it's like 75% of my site. Considering the unreleased Universal Monsters Transformers around the same time... suddenly my weird site about robots and monsters isn't so weird after all. It's totally normal to post about Halloween in February.

Gig Monsterbots

I'm not even going to lie, Tigerbot and Drekbot are better names than Grotusque and DoubleCross. Actually, Il Drago and La Tigre is even better. I don't have any tattoos, but if I did, it would be Flammeggiante around my bicep. That would be so much cooler than barbwire. You hear that linebacker in 1998? IT WOULD BE BETTER THAN YOUR BARBWIRE.
