Dino Megazord [Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignite]

It’s time for the Zords to combine, because we need Megazord Power! After finally acquiring all the members of the combinable Dino Megazord team, it was time to put them together and see how things worked out.

This is a large toy, so it was a bit of a wrestling match to assemble them. First, I formed the Dino Tanker, which is pretty much the Megazord sitting down and reading an imaginary newspaper.

The Tyrannosaurus folds into place easily. The lower legs fold up into the thighs, and the Sabertooth Tiger and Triceratops connect to the folded-up T-Rex’s knees. You’ll have to adjust the Sabertooth Tiger into proper position. I feel like there was a glitch in the matrix somewhere, as the Tiger has some articulation behind her front legs that I don’t recall noticing initially. The Triceratops pretty much just connects — he’s a basic toy.

The connection points have little release buttons on the backs of the knees that I found pretty novel. Considering the size of it all, locking joints are a good idea.

The Mastodon forms the back and arms of the Megazord, and the cannons for the Dino Tanker. It’s essentially the same configuration, with the positioning of the Megazord’s hands and arms being the deciding factor.

The Pterodactyl is the only really difficult member to utilize in Tank form. She rests on the tank’s back, her missile launchers connecting to the cannons to complete the weaponry. There are obvious connection points I couldn’t get her to snap into due to the Mastodon legs that form back ornamentation blocking the way. The other option is to slide her tail into a docking point between those Mastodon legs. This works and seems designed for it, but it’s not very stable. I think Pink Bird fell off a thousand times while I was putting the tank on a TV tray to get a halfway decent picture.

The joints are nice and clicky, but the combined weight makes this form feel a little unstable. I couldn’t get it to stand fully upright without the tank leaning.

Forming the Megazord, however, was a much better experience. Remove the Pterodactyl and stand the tank upright. Flip the Megazord’s hands out, remove the launchers, and connect them to the back. There’s also some shoulder armor to flip up. On mine, those parts didn’t line up perfectly and came loose a few times. Folding them back down for Mastodon mode required holding everything just right to allow clearance.

The Tyrannosaurus head folds away into the chest compartment, and the Megazord’s head remains — just fold out the horns. The Pterodactyl’s head and wings fold into themselves and connect to form the chest plate. The Mastodon head, which was the front of the Dino Tank, becomes a shield. The Power Sword, which had been sitting off to the side, can finally be held.

In this form, the team is much more stable and satisfying to handle. I’ve seen horror stories of Tyrannosaurus waists breaking, so be careful with yours. The Megazord is a big, chonky robot with nice clicky joints, and I love it.

I’ve seen others online not like it as much, so your mileage may vary. There’s also a boxed set with a slightly different deco if you want to forgo acquiring all five members separately.

Ultimately, I really like this set despite its flaws. The individual Zords are fun, if basic, and the combined Dino Megazord feels like a Shogun Warriors spiritual successor. Later this year, Playmates will be releasing a Thunder Megazord set in the same size, and I’m looking forward to that. Hopefully a Dragonzord will join the team as well.

Dino Megazord/Daizyuzin is a large and fun representation of the classic combiner meant for kids… but loved by this grown-ass man. There’s a real sense of accomplishment in completing a team like this, and I’m going to bask in it for a while.

Pterodactyl [Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition]

Zordon needed Five Teenagers with Attitude (which still feels like a wildly irresponsible recruitment strategy), but for the Re-Ignition Combinable Megazord, we needed five Zords with slightly larger proportions.

Closing out the team is the Pink Ranger’s Pterodactyl — a word I cannot spell correctly without spellcheck threatening to go full Skynet. From here on out, we’re calling her the Pink Bird.

Pink Bird completes the Dino Megazord/Daizyujin by forming the chest. She’s also proven to be one of the trickier Zords to find. I lucked into mine during a random Walmart trip where it was just… sitting there. A label on the back made it clear it had been an online order that got stocked instead. Even better, whatever barcode they slapped on it rang up a few dollars cheaper than retail.

Unfortunately (or maybe predictably), Pink Bird is the most basic of the five Zords. She’s essentially the chest plate with fold-out wings and a head. The head does have some articulation — you can perch her or put her in a flying pose, and the mouth opens. Included are two missile launchers that mount to the Megazord’s back but can also attach to Pink Bird’s tail. They fire pink energy blast rockets, because of course they do.

Most interestingly, Pink Bird includes the Ranger team in mini form. Playmates will be launching a blind box line featuring mini Rangers, Monsters, Zords, and Megazords in the coming months, and in a way this set quietly debuts that format by including Rangers scaled to their Zords. It’s a neat bonus and honestly something I’ve been looking forward to since it was announced.

One thing I’ve always liked about the Pterodactyl design is its slight resemblance to Windstorm from Starriors — something I’ve mentioned in a prior post about another Pink Pterodactyl release. Funnily enough, that post pops up in Google Image results when searching Windstorm, which is the kind of niche internet victory I appreciate more than I probably should.

Like most combining team toys, though, the individual mode often takes a back seat to the combined form, and Pink Bird is a prime example. On her own, she’s solid and sharp-looking, but clearly designed to become something greater.

With that, we’ve wrapped up our look at the individual Zords from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition — at least until the Thunder Megazord team arrives. But now it’s time to do what these were built to do.

Because we need Megazord Power.

Mastodon [Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Re-Ignition]

The last time we looked at the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition Zords, it was Halloween. For whatever reason, Mastodon and Pterodactyl have been a little harder to find, but thankfully the Mrs. tracked this one down and stuck it under the Christmas tree. I honestly don’t know how she does it.

I’ve always been fond of the Mastodon. There was a time I preferred Power Rangers over Zyuranger simply out of familiarity, but these days I find myself watching the Tokushoutsu livestream of Zyuranger pretty regularly and honestly favoring it more. Not trying to be that “the original is better” guy, but I really enjoy the slightly more mature tone and fantasy setting, even if it’s still very much a kids show. I used to just think Mastodon looked cool. Now I actually appreciate Goushi a lot more as a character too.

I’ve seen some folks say they’re not enjoying the Re-Ignition Zords as much as other versions, and that’s totally fine. Me? I’m into them. There’s something really satisfying about these extra-large, chunky toys. They scratch that old Shogun Warriors itch in a weird way. They’re still very close to the original Bandai designs, so they almost feel like oversized Gobots. Considering all the molds Tonka licensed back in the day, if history had shifted just a little, the originals might have ended up Gobots. Funny how that works.

Mastodon (or Mammoth, depending on your preference) is basically a big robot elephant. There’s not much articulation to speak of — he kind of just is what he is. But considering his role in the Dino Megazord and Dino Tanker, I can overlook that. He’s the backbone. The arms. The stabilizer. All that bulk and chonk goes directly into making the combined form feel stocky and powerful. On his own, yeah, he’s a little basic — but he still looks great. I really like the decorative line work, and despite being a brand new release, it keeps that classic Bandai toy aesthetic I’ve always loved.

There are no firing missiles or gimmicks here, but Mastodon does come with the Megazord’s Power Sword — or Godhorn, if you’ve got Zyuranger music playing in your head. His head detaches to become the Megazord’s shield, and I’ve always loved that visual. 

We’re getting close, Zone Base readers. The Re-Ignition Dino Megazord is almost complete, and I’m really looking forward to combining the full team in the coming weeks.

Sabretooth Tiger [Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition/Combinable Dinozord]

Getting back to out look at Playmates take on the Dino Megazord from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (or Daizyuzin from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger if your more Super Sentai leaning) is the Yellow Sabretooth Tiger. Playmates made some really good Voltron sets that I liked a whole lot. Which is why I was anticipating this set so much. It's funny, because on it's own, the Sabretooth Tiger feels like a Voltron lion.

Like the other Zords so far, this is a pleasantly big blocky robot toy with old school DNA in abundance. Some may complain about the limited leg articulation... and that's fair. I wanted more movement in the legs themselves and all there is basic joints. Like the Triceratops, it's very obvious that this toy is part of a combiner team. Also like the Triceratops is a firing rocket in the tail that's easy to accidentally shoot. Be careful to not loose it. Transformation to leg mode is easy, just fold the legs and tail into position. The head folds up to form a foot... be sure to fold the teeth up and out of the way.

There's working wheels for Dinotanker mode, which I assumed the Megazord had... but saw nothing regarding. It's a silly mode, but I've always liked it. Once again the Bandai origins shin through and I'm happy so far with this set. Now it's just time to wait for the other members of the team to form the Megazord. We're halfway there... and hopefully they'll be out soon. There's tons of monsters around Zone Base and we need all the help we can get!

Triceratops [Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition/Combinable Dinozord]

One problem with combiner teams is that there is compromises in the individual members to create the combined form. The Triceratops is a pretty good example of that, it's usually a giant brick. A cool brick, but a brick non-the-less. Fortunately, that works in it's favor. The Triceratops is essentially a tank that also becomes a leg, Playmates did just that. It's a simple toy, but pleasant.

The dino head has a decent range of movement which will come in hand for the combined Megazord. The tail features the double laser tip that doubles as a firing missile. It folds flush into the dino body during conversion, but I'd be careful. Loosing a missile sucks as is, but when the missile is part of the the toys visual aesthetic... ugh. Like I said, it may be a brick... but it's a cool brick. The simple styling and colors look great. There's a timeless quality to some of these old robots. Just a good looking robot tank dinosaur that becomes a leg.

Tyrannosaurus [Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition/Combinable Dinozord]

It's odd. Feels just like the other day I was welcoming Hasbro's Power Ranger toys with open arms only to be doing that now for Playmates take on the teenagers with attitude. It's an odd change, but one of the steps we're seeing of Hasbro being more of an IP owner than a toy manufacturer. I don't know how far this walk will end up being, but it's fascinating to watch. Regardless, it's good news because Playmates makes GREAT toys. Power Rangers goes in line with their Monsterverse Kaiju action figures and so far they seem to be on a pretty positive path.

My main focal point with their MMPR output for the time being is their Dinozords. Next year they have a pretty interesting mini line coming that I want to get my hands on... but that's next year. This current set of Zords are a combinable team that once completed will form the Dino Megazord from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Or for you Super Sentai fans, Daizyuzin from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger. I'm not 100% sure, but it feels like the same design team that made Playmates Voltron were behind this set. I liked their Voltron toys, so that's a positive. Like those Lions, these are big chunky bots that are very similar to the Bandai designs that came before them. There's obviously some differences, but that original DNA is still here.

Today we'll be taking a look at the Tyrannosaurus. The Tyrannosaurus is a Deluxe figure from the assortment with the Deluxe classification owing to it's size. It and the Mastodon are larger toys. All the Dinozords cost $23.98 at my local Walmart, so I'm not sure if deluxes are intended to cost more or not. There's probably some tariff offsetting in that pricing to be fair. Still, $120 for all five isn't bad. Considering the size (they're BIG), I'm not complaining. Tyrannosaurus is a nice hefty dino full of big chonky robot vibes. There's a decent amount of articulation in his legs that clicks satisfyingly when moved. Earlier I said the Bandai DNA is present and it really is. This feels 100% like holding a big ass Gobot and I fucking love it. They did a great job and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the set and building the Megazord.

It was a rainy weekend full of TV and rest. I feel asleep watching Zyuranger and TMNT a few times and even watched the new Garfield movie. As far as toys go, I got the Go-Bots Guardians 3-Pack! Heck yeah! I had somehow missed out on the pre-orders, but found it at my local Gamestop. Well, I've got a busy day ahead of me. It's the last week before our Annual Halloween party starts for the next 3 months! Hope you're all looking forward to some Pumpkin Spiced Mayhem! Well, I've got a fun week planned for you all. Halloween is coming...

Once & Always

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always premiers today on Netflix and I was happy to watch it while doing my morning exercises. The special is meant to serve as a 30th anniversary of the series reunion... and it's exactly that. Without going into spoilers, the special reunites much of the MMPR cast in a new adventure to stop Robo Rita Repulsa's newest plan. What's that? Rita is a robot? Go watch the show... you'll love it. I did.

I'd say it's hard to believe it's been 30 years since Power Rangers debuted... but no, it's totally been a long time. For me, I was a kid who liked Godzilla and Transformers when discovering Dynaman late one Friday night on the USA Network. A few years later, MMPR started airing on Fox Kids... and I kinda wondered why they weren't playing Cheap Trick during the fights. Regardless, I loved the cheesy jokes and super hero action. All these years later and I still love classic MMPR better than the series that followed (not knocking those either, mind you).

It's a little bittersweet with the recent passing of Jason David Frank that the series got such a perfect love letter. However even with his and Thuy Trang's unfortunately leaving us much too early, the special honors their memory and treats the cast lovingly. I'm admittedly in post show glow still, but that was great. While playing to nostalgia, it still feels like a brand new episode of MMPR and I guess that's what it really is. I also appreciate how it's very much a modern tokusatsu production. I'd almost have expected this to have been airing on Tokushoutsu during a special event. I'm gushing, it was really that great.

Wicked. Ass. Pumpkin.

It's the first week of January, hard to believe it's already Halloween time. No it's not, this is Zone Base where everyday is Halloween! Speaking of Halloween, boo! Another of the Christmas gifts from my wife (there is going to be a bit of these posts for awhile) was the new Pumpkin Rapper figure from the Power Rangers Lightening Collection. I probably don't have to tell you this but, I've always liked him.

Pumpkin Rapper hails from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Which as boring as that may be to some Power Rangers fans, is my favorite era of the show. However the character isn't from original Super Sentai footage. Instead from the new footage Toei had made for Saban as they had burned through Zyuranger episodes and needed more content.

Like Frankenstein, Pumpkin Rapper is another Halloween episode monster... and the coolest one in my opinion. He appeared in two different Halloween episodes. In 'Trick or Treat' as the main villain and returning in 'Zedd's Monster Mash' which takes place in a haunted forest!

There's been a few figures of the guy. The newest being this Lightening Collection figure, which is a super nice representation. In the box you get the Rapper, three pumpkins, two vines, a magic doo hickey, and 2 sets of hands. One set can hold things, like the vines. The other is in dramatic positions for dramatic posing with one hand in a fist and the other open. Dramatically.

The two vines can be held as weapons to be used a whips and lassos. The pumpkins can be placed over the heads of Rangers or the Putty Patrol to recreate the big battle in 'Trick or Treat'. The magic doo hickey can be placed over his arm to show him casting those spooky spells. You can put a pumpkin in it as well, it's neat.

The figure is very well articulated with all sorts of joints that move all sorts of ways. I think the only thing keeping you from putting him into any pose possible would be that giant noggin.

It's an awesome higher grade figure of one of my favorite Power Rangers monsters. I love a pumpkin headed freak and he fits the bill with that specific flair that comes from a Japanese production.

From various shows, cartoons, and games, I've always loved the Japanese style of portraying monsters. That specific style on something that represents my favorite time of year is impossibly irresistible.

Halloween is quite a ways away, even with the way I celebrate it. Throughout the year I'll watch random specials and commercials, because I just love it in general. Something like this is another fun way to experience the season all year long. It doesn't hurt that it's a excellent figure either.

Ooh, you Rangers make me mad; waking me up with a rap that bad.

Guardian Beast Formation

This is the Tyrannosaurus Rex Zord from the new Hasbro Dino Megazord set. Today's post was going to be all about him as a companion to my prior Zord post. Somewhere in between then and now I went to Target and got the missing set of Zords to complete the Megazord. 

This is now a post about the set. Which is probably going to be more interesting than just a few words about a toy robot dinosaur. Now it's a few words about five toy robot dinosaurs. Much better.

I already talked about the Mastodon and Pterodactyl, so I'm going to focus on the other three and the finished Megazord. I've linked to the prior post twice and it's like maybe three posts down anyway. It should be easy to find.

Of the five Zords, the T-Rex is definitely the nicest. He comes packaged by himself with the the power sword. Forming the bulk of the Megazord, he has the most articulation and is the biggest boi in the crew. His mouth opens to take a bite. Duh.

The legs feature a range of motion with points of articulation at the hips, knees, and ankles. This comes from the combination, but also makes for a reasonably nice toy.  His tiny arms have a small range of movement as well. If you noticed the pegs on his knees, you've probably figured out those are connector ports for the other two Zords.

Saber Tooth Tiger and Triceratops come together. The two are of similar size as they form lower legs for the Megazord. I said in the prior post that these figures are building blocks for the combined mode and it's very clear with these two. The tiger is the more elaborate in the pack. The toy has pretty limited articulation, the tail moves as does it's legs. Though they are only jointed at the hips with the actual legs being static. It's still pretty serviceable.

The Triceratops is practically a solid block. His tail/cannon can raise. That's pretty accurate for the Zord honestly. 

When converting the two into their leg modes, heads can move into place as do other extremities. The Saber Tooth Tigers sabers also adjust to move out of the way. I don't know if this counts as articulation, unless you intend to pose them looking to the stars. Full of wonder.

The t-rex moves into combined formation pretty easily. Just straighten him a out, fold in a few parts. His chest opens for dino head storage.

Mirroring the transformation on the show, I went for the Dino Tank first. It forms pretty naturally as it's basically the Megazord 80% transformed. I had a little trouble getting the Pterodactyl to stay in it's proper place. There's a place it tabs into on the Mastodons legs which didn't fit together well. Your mileage may vary. It's a pretty good representation of the tank.

The Megazord itself is pretty cool. A decent representation of the classic design, he almost feels a little lost in time. Like they found some toy design from 1993 and put it into production. As you can see, he can hold the power sword and Mastodon head as a shield. It's an overall good looking toy based on a good looking robot. 

I want to point out that in Zyuranger, the power sword is called 'God Horn'. That's the best name ever.

I've been looking forward to this all year after it was shown off at NYCC. Of course with the pandemic, this year has felt like an eternity. I guess that's why having it now feels like such an accomplishment. I swear I've aged 6 years since March. 

I don't know what the goal is with this toy. It's this random classic toy made anew and sold alongside the other kid aimed Power Rangers toys. Is there more planned? I hope so, but there's no word yet. Except this one.

I'm happy with my new Megazord toy. It's nice and relatively inexpensive. I had fun getting all the sets, even if it only took two trips to Target on different days. I dig it.

Pink and Black Zords

I was pretty happy to luck up on a few of the Zords for the new Hasbro Dino Megazord toy. From what I understand, the set is available this way through Target with a gift set through Amazon coming soon. 

I picked up the T-Rex and Mastodon/Pterodactyl two pack. I'll still need the Triceratops/Saber Tooth Tiger two pack to complete the Megazord. Hopefully they'll have that restocked soon. 

I'm talking about that Mastodon/Pterodactyl set today. I got the two Zords together for $14.99. The Mastodon is pretty big and it'd be pretty easy to overlook the Pink Ranger's Zord on a first glance. Make no mistake about these new toys, they're not high end collectors pieces. These are comparable to the Beast Morphers standard toy line and in similar packaging.

It's weird to see a nearly 30 year old Megazord next to this years model, but I'm not complaining. I can appreciate having older characters available at a lower price. I hope other older Megazords follow in this format. I'd love a Dragonzord to combine with this set. A Titanus or Thunder Megazord would be great.

By themselves, these are pretty basic toys. The pterodactyl has always felt a little shoehorned to me. It's the Megazord's chest piece with wings and a head and there's no hiding that here. It's a serviceable toy of that without any bells or whistles. 

The mastodon is a bulky robot with plug in cannons. These two may seem pretty limited and by themselves they are. They're building blocks for a combined form and don't make any apologies about it. Being pretty faithful recreations of the original design, there's a lot to love about holding such an old school robot toy. If that's your thing.

The mastodon forms the arms of the Megazord and and turrets for the combiners tank mode. Unfolding him for this is easy enough, but be careful. I found myself nervous that I was about to tear the toy apart due to parts not opening up. A pesky connector just didn't want to let go, so don't go yanking on yours carelessly. You could end up breaking your robot elephant.

In all they're pretty faithful new toy of an old robot. I've seen complaints about how basic the toy is, which I guess is fair. Most would assume a vintage design would get a more premium toy. It's not a very elaborate set. Like I said, I'm all for a lower cost version. Toys are overpriced enough as is, and I like the simplicity of older robot toys. So picking up some new old toys is fun for me.

Dora Circe

In anticipation of Rangerstop next month, I've been watching Zyuranger episodes lately to curb the excitement. Admittedly I watch enough Rangers as is, but that's my alibi and I'm sticking with it. Earlier today I watched the episode "Terror! Eaten in an Instant" which starred Dora Circe as the monster of the week. The MMPR Pudgy Pig is based on Dora Circe (in case you thought he looked familiar) and the characters are pretty similar (maybe not as much in the case of the second Pudgy Pig). The episode is one of the more silly adventures of Zyuranger featuring a grocery store owning family of who loves to eat together. Bandora was bitter as she was trying to loose weight and saw the family leading her to sick the monster on them.

Dora Circe, despite outward appearances, moves so fast that's he's practically invisible. This leads to some funny bits where the family thinks their food is being stolen by one another and starts fighting. The monster then goes on to eat all the food in their store before moving onto the rest of the town. Before long the entire town is fighting among each other (you get grumpy when you're hungry) and the Zyurangers discover the pig monster causing all the problems.

Initially they confront Dora Circe, whom during the fight eat's their weapons and gains the upper hand before Gnome intervenes and takes the Rangers with him to his home. It's there that the Rangers have to pass a test so that Gnome will give them a herb that will help them defeat the monster. Of course it's a food themed test and the Rangers have to eat an insane amount of food. After Boi is able to eat a carrot (apparently he hates carrots) they are given the herb.

The Zyurangers trick Dora Circe into eating the herb causing him to vomit everything he's eaten (including their weapons) out. The weakened monster is promptly destroyed with the Howling Cannon and the town gets back to normal. Like I said, it's a silly episode. Despite the comedic nature, it goes into the more fantasy elements of Zyuranger that I like so much. The MMPR episode that uses the footage from this episode isn't too different, but enough to be distinct and have a separate plot. I do like MMPR better as I've been watching it for 25 years and have an attachment, but I do think Zyuranger is a better show. Episodes like this are part of the reason why.

In which I talk about the Beast Morphers team up epsiode

So, going around the rumor mill lately is a team up of current and past Power Rangers in an upcoming episode of Beast Morphers. This isn't too uncommon in Power Ranger series and with so many team up episodes in Super Sentai, the footage is available to make it happen. It wasn't really officially announced, just in the rumors as former Power Ranger actors were spotted in New Zealand where Beast Morphers (like most Power Rangers shows) is filmed. Well, non other than Austin St. John (the original Red Ranger) is said to be in an episode of Beast Morphers.

So the team up looks pretty much solid at this point and know what? I'm happy about that. I like the team up episodes and as generic as it may sound, MMPR is my favorite Power Rangers show. I never get tired of those episodes and that era, so seeing Jason show up in Beast Morphers (which I REALLY like) is a treat. Not to mention, since the footage is obviously coming from Kyoryuger vs Go Busters, that pretty much confirms the Dino Charge cast members being spotted near filming. Dino Charge is another PR series I REALLY like, so it will be great to see those Rangers in action again.

It's funny and just to once again prove my lack of organization, I don't always know what I'm going to write here each day. Sometimes I'll have a post in mind in advance, lot's of times I'm coming up with it not long before I write it. I'll have an idea, and either go with it or it turns into something else as I'm looking into that idea. Today as I was driving to work, I was thinking about Ranger Stop here in two months. I've been wanting to write something about Power Rangers all week, but didn't know what. Then wham damn the universe gave me a subject.

Alpha's Magical Christmas

During the holiday weekend, I spent a few hours watching Zyuranger. My wife, asked me why I was watching it since I regularly watch Power Rangers on Netflix already and have really already seen it all multiple times. Aside from the 'I like it', I told her it was a different show. Which, it is. Thinking about it, I don't think that's well established. It's not completely common knowledge that Power Rangers is made from Super Sentai shows, but known well enough that most people do understand that it's made from other footage. Most folks assume that it's basically the same show with just the non action sequences swapped out. Which isn't exactly true.
