Seeing how Pacific Rim is a live action robot cartoon (for some people the point is now out of the atmosphere over their heads), Legendary Pictures has this awesome poster for Uprising in Japan. Drawn by Masami Obari, it intentionally invokes Gundam imagery. Hopefully the film is successful over there as here it did similar to the originals numbers. I don't expect another sequel (I never thought this one would ever happen), but man would love more.

Cancel the Apocalypse again!

Earlier today, at about 4:20 I saw Pacific Rim Uprising and I'm just now coming down from the adrenaline rush. Without giving any spoilers my thoughts are simple. I liked it. I liked it a whole lot. That was a damn good follow up and a worthy continuation to the Pacific Rim storyline. I really liked the developments since the last movie and how things are set to go forward assuming they make more movies. I know they plan to and before I go any further consider this a spoiler warning even though I don't consider what I'm going to say is an actual spoiler.

There's intention to crossover Pacific Rim in with Monsterverse (I CALLED IT), you can look the movie up on Wikipedia and see the citations for yourself. That however isn't a big issue here. Here the big issue is expanding the setting to allow the series to go forward, which they did with full robot cartoon love letter madness. I really liked some of the kaiju's methods and the evil Jaegers (that's in the trailers, so not spoilery). The final battle was amazing on an apocalyptic and insane level.

Though the cheesy dialog is often cited as a problem by critics without much sense of awareness. Point blank, this movie is 100% for it's intended audience with no apologies or compromise. Just like with the original it's chock full of homage and even has a few extremely happy Easter eggs.

The only problem I had with the movie is the story moves just a touch too fast. While I could easily keep up with what was going on, I could see where someone else might not. It does stand out from the originals more slow paced pacing leading up the final act. Though with the original masterpiece I wanted more Kaiju vs Jaeger action, something Uprising makes up for in abundance. There's crazy action everywhere with Jaegers taking center stage. So essentially the sheer amount of robot carnage made up for the breakneck pace of the storyline. I've already seen folks in toku groups compare it to Godzilla Final Wars. Which while it might come at you at a crazy pace, it's not near as crazy or as epileptic as Final Wars.

My minds a mush of colors and rovot insanity in the best of ways. Pacific Rim Uprising was an absolute blast and gets my approval as a big fan of the original movie. I want more and I want it now.

Tickets Uprising!

Earlier tonight, my wife purchased our tickets to Pacific Rim Uprising and boy are my arms tired. Mostly because of me flapping them around like crazy in excitement. I was a little peeved by the lack of listings at my local theaters to purchase them ahead of time, but then like a sudden Uprising of awesome all the theaters suddenly posted showtimes! We bought our tickets in what the theater calls 2D Extreme which I'm assuming means a better sound system, and that's totes ok by me!

My excitement is near catastrophic levels, I've been waiting for this ever since the sequel was first announced as Maelstrom. Pacific Rim when it hit in 2013 was the perfect storm and completely blew me away. It was like a religious experience, I was telling people about this movie I saw that was amazing. Going in a fan of robots and kaiju and witnessing an amazing big budget love letter to all things super robot, tokusatsu, kaiju, Saturday morning cartoons performed to perfection was a game changer. It took me awhile to accept that my long time favorite movie, Halloween (1978) had been knocked off it's throne in my head space. It had been so long that Halloween and Transformers the movie (1986) had occupied a shared ground in that favorite movie category in my mind that I ... had to come with terms with it.

So with the long awaited sequel coming (releasing tonight, but work schedule and you know, I can't buy things like movie tickets without a job) and my viewing Saturday afternoon (I'll sleep like 3 hours after work and drink a ton of Monster before seeing Gypsy Avenger punch a ton of monster) I am probably unbearable to deal with in levels of giddy.

Somebody got it

An annoyance as a Pacific Rim fan is the person who just doesn't get it. No, not the person who may not be a fan or it's just not their thing, the person who just doesn't get it. The robot or kaiju fan who just compares it to other similar properties amd dismisses it with flippant and arrogant remarks. I try to just ignore them as it's usually the best policy, but it does get a little grating at times. Fortunately theirs the occasional little bit like this that 100% nails it.

Strangely my local theaters are a bit limited on showtimes for it, which is very perplexing. This was the same issue I had watching the new It this past fall. I don't understand why either, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I had wondered if the big success of Black Panther had caused my theaters to have more showings of it creating a shortage of showtimes for other movies, but no, it's slowing down in showtimes, so I can't figure out what exactly is causing this. It's a Legendary Pictures movie, which Kong Skull Island was and it had plenty of showtimes at my local theaters. It's a Universal release, so one would think it would be really wide spread. Strange, really strange.

Either way, with my birthday less than two weeks away, this will be the ideal way to begin ringing it in. Come to think of it, it's pretty similar to last year with March kicking off with the Switch release, then Toylanta, followed by Kong Skull Island and the Power Rangers movie before my birthday. This year it it's been Toylanta and Pacific Rim Uprising. Like, somebody decided to make March big ass monster movie month.

Sounds like a good idea.

NYCC 2017 reveals

New York Comic Con is starting up and with it came the initial reveals. Hasbro was showing off plenty of their upcoming Power of the Primes toys to my happiness. I finally got a good view of more of the upcoming Primemasters and couldn't be happier. I want these so bad that it's bordering scary. I'll cut you man. Looks at the new Terrorcons and Dinobots were also great. The new black repaint of the POTP Rodimus Prime was unexpected and I love it. Taking cues from prior black versions of Rodimus and even the Shattered Glass versions beard, the toy looks great and even uses Unicron in the naming making me think about those old Marvel UK TF stories with Rodimus possessed by Unicron. Was really disappointing to miss out on getting a chance to buy the NYCC Grotesque (in the style of the Hascon Arcee) as it was put on Hasbro Toy Shop before I was aware. Fortunately, news of it being available at Toys R Us soon took away a little of the sting. Just hoping I get a fair shot at that one. There's a ton of great pictures and reports at TFW2005.

There was plenty of Power Rangers reveals to my delight. The Mini-Pla kits of various Zords really have my attention, as I'd love to get all the kits from MMPR (hoping they're fairly affordable). I think my biggest surprise though was seeing that the upcoming Super Ninja Steel is delving more into Ninninger footage and we're getting a US version of this guy. Really happy for this as it's a great design and would like to just stroll into Target and pick it up. There's a ton of great pictures and reports at Tokunation.

I've seen a few glimpses of the upcoming Pacific Rim Uprising toys, but am really waiting until tomorrow to go more into it when the trailer goes up. So far they have a teaser of the trailer up that's really wetting appetites over here at Zone Base HQ. Which means me. I'm really excited.

Imagining a Pacific Rim Universal Studios Experience

So, Pacific Rim is my favorite movie. I love it. It's a wonder super robot Saturday morning cartoon come to life. With Pacific Rim Uprising coming out just in time for my birthday, excitement is an understatement. A recent conversation in Toku Legion about the possibility of a Universal Studios ride based on PR as Uprising is a Universal Pictures release. The fact that Terminator 2 3D is closing to make room for a new experience based on a 'exciting Universal film franchise' completely inspired me to dream up an attraction based in the Terminator show building in like 5 minutes. I think we all are confused as to why I'm either not employed by one of these companies or locked away in an asylum drawing robots on the wall.

So, here's my newest Universal Studios fan fiction attraction.

Using the Terminator 2 3D set up, I can see the entire thing being a Shatterdome facade and the Pan Pacific Defense Corps putting on a demonstration for new investors or political visitors (which are you, the guests) in the Jaeger program. The rising stage areas that once held the live action Terminators could present Ranger suits at a point in the presentation. The placement in the theater screen could be where live actors walk in and out the 4D movie going on interacting with the Jagers on screen moving about. The 3D video combined with the sensory additions from the theaters moving seats, lights, and other effects would really play up the experience of looking at Gypsy Danger in the face as it moves about. 

Just as things are going smoothly, we have a breach and a kaiju is attacking... ORLANDO FLORIDA! We are then treated to a visual spectacle on screen as the Jaeger fights the kaiju complete with all sorts of 4K tricks. Seats bumping around. Fire, lights, 3D video, (what if the kaiju had banana breath?), you name it. Finally Gypsy Danger kills the kaiju in a messy splatter of blood as we get sprayed by water in the seats. The PPDC then addresses us and the show is over. As we leave the Shatterdome, we enter a gift shoft that of course has all our Pacifc Rim needs available.

Resetting the clock.

When Pacific Rim came in 2013, I was enraptured. It was this wonderful movie that captured and paid homage to the various super robot cartoons and kaiju movies I grew up watching. It was effectively a live action Saturday morning carton and I loved it. It quickly rose to replace Halloween (1978) as my number 1 favorite movie (don't worry, Halloween is still pretty high on the list).

Following seeing it, I'd approach people and talk to them about the movie like it was a new religion I had found and wanted to spread. It was just so wonderful I couldn't stop gushing over it.

So of course, I've been following the on again/off again news of the sequel. For a while they were calling it Maelstrom, which would have been a damn fine name. However, it's ultimately been named Uprising, which is a great fitting name for a follow up. Maelstrom implied an onslaught of kaiju and just a pure storm of hell on earth. Uprising is an more ominous title. It can imply both bad and good themes. The Kaiju have returned, but so have the Jaegers!

When the art first popped up, everyone was quick to figure out the new form of Gypsy Danger. The other two were a mystery. Lots of folks speculated they were new versions of Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha, others (like myself) thought they were new Jaegers. Just a day later the Pacific Rim Facebook page confirmed they were version 2.0 Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha (after I had already recorded my podcast episode for the week speculating they were new bots *sigh*). Making things more exciting, that's not just Gypsy Danger 2.0, it's now named Gypsy Avenger! Which is just an awesome name and really fitting for a new version.

I'm bubbling over with excitement and not being very patient waiting for this new movie to come out. I literally cannot wait, and ... you know that particular feeling of excitement you get as a fan? That mix of euphoria, excitement, and bewilderment into a feeling of joy that's next to impossible to express? Well right now I could bottle it in bulk and sell it.

I see this and want a game by Konami for my Super Nintendo.
