Weekly Halloween~ Alone in the Woods

The woods can be kinda creepy. I mean, yeah, nature is wonderful and all... but you know. Sometimes there's just random noises that come out from some woods and no matter how much you try to explain it away... you're still creeped out. With all the bad stuff that can happen it's only a matter of time before things get spooky.

Weekly Halloween~ The Haunted Toys R Us

There's several certain things you'll experience depending on your generation. Several of us all know that copy of Frampton Comes Alive every bodies parents had. If you're a Transformers fan of a certain age, you're well acquainted with cardboard boxes full of one dollar Flip Changers at old BotCons. If you're into the paranormal... you've heard about the haunted Toys R Us. It's one of those ghost stories that just stays around, but not without reason. It's a pretty good story and there's something charming about a ghost in a toy store. Creepily so, sure, but there's just something neat about it. In another time it would have been a children's movie.

Weekly Halloween~ Is someone in there?

Ever go into a room and feel like someone else is in there, despite knowing you're alone? It's weird huh? I remember this one building I worked at. One of the offices was mostly empty but you never felt alone in there. It was a bit intimidating, like I needed to leave. It was probably just my imagination or maybe emotions from a repressed memory. It's just weird. Kinda like today's video. I don't think I've ever walked into a hotel room and felt like it was empty.

Weekly Halloween- Starr of the Show

Almost every town has a local haunted house. That house the kids whisper about and everybody walks a little faster to pass by. Rebellious teenagers and paranormal types try to explore it in hopes of finding something scary. In Royal Oak, Michigan, the Orson Starr house is said to be haunted by several different ghosts. Is it real?

Go to Hades

If you were in Chicago in 1995, chances are you visited Hades Haunted House at Halloween. Despite the corny 'acting' and ham fisted themes, haunted houses are great. I always enjoy good lighting and the black lights inside these things make everything look amazing. There's a certain charm about older haunted attractions. The dated costumes and effects give them a different character than newer affairs. Though, in time, the newer ones will join the ranks of the older haunts. There is definitely a hard line somewhere in the presentation of these commercials though. I have a real appreciation of that older style. I'm sure you've noticed.

Summer is a Spooky Season

... and it's coming to an end. Well, here anyway. Next week, the Zone Base Halloween season officially begins. Obviously Weekly Halloween will be taking a break as there'll be Pumpkin Spiced Mayhem for 3 months. But until next week... I always feel like somebodies watching me. Don't you?

Weekly Halloween: Spooky Summer Approaches

Spring turns into summer, and Summer is a Spooky Season. Long time readers know I have a tradition around here, and that's observing the scary nature of summer as the lead up to Halloween. Sure, everyday is Halloween on Planet Zone. However when it's actually Halloween time, we go nuts. A solid 5 months of macabre and mayhem! But before the pumpkin spice flows, there's summer. The little peeps and peaks of our favorite season begin working their way into our spaces. The term that's most recently been used is Code Orange, and that's pretty appropriate as June the spooky signal starts flickering on.

May began with Walpurgis Night and you've been noticing all month people celebrating Halfway to Halloween. The weather where you're at may vary, but Memorial Day has always been the unofficial beginning of summer for me. That's next week. So Monday will be a holiday and you all will have to forgive me for taking a day off. When I come back on Tuesday, the Spooky Summer will begin. Friday the 13th took place at a summer camp and ghost season in some countries is in summer. Between all those bright colors and festive fireworks, is something scary. Summer is a spooky season.

While the regular content will stay the same around here, there will be more of a slant towards the scarier stuff (BTW, turn on the captions on the video above if you need help understanding what they're saying). There will be more and more posts about scary toys, cartoons, games, and maybe a paranormal post or two (hundred). All leading up to August, when the pumpkins come out. At this point, I know you all love it. However, if you're new to the Base...

Hold onto your dooky, summer is spooky.

Weekly Halloween: The Haunting of Grayskull

Castle Grayskull is a spooky place. It's a big, old,and decrepit castle with a freaking skull for a front door. Inside is all sorts of magic and sorcery. Hard to believe this is the good guys place, but it is... well unless Skeletor takes over and becomes Master of the Universe. While there's all sorts of scary things within, one particular ghost serves a purpose. The Spirit of Grayskull is the voice of the castle itself. He serves to guide those within on matters like the power sword and becoming King of the Castle.

Originally the spirit was depicted as a cloud like skull face and was a more involved  fictionally in the early days, but did stick around. He appears in the original Filmation cartoon as a disembodied head. Later in Classics, it was established to be the ghostly form of King Grayskull himself. Personally I prefer those earlier depictions. Eternia and all it's citizens were more raw and that floating skull coming out of a skull shaped haunted castle was just perfect.

Weekly Halloween: Spooky Places

One of the reasons I keep revisiting the Amityville Horror is that it's a classic ghost story. Don't get me wrong, the movies are terrible. The story itself is what I'm talking about. To this day I can still remember that feeling of doom whenever the classic picture of it in black and white (it always looked brown to me) would show up. It was one of those few things that made me feel as scared as it did. Not just scary, a threatening terror that was dangerous to even think about. Even though I've never been to there, it feels familiar. Instead of the movies, I prefer to watch the various documentaries about the whole thing. I can re-watch the same ones over and over. I wasn't there, but it some ways, the whole thing feels more like a memory than a story I've seen.

Weekly Halloween: Living in the Amityville Horror

I'm endlessly entertained by the Amityville Horror. Not the movies, but the real life events. I'll watch documentaries and read news clips. It's fascinating to me. Probably because I was a young child when it was a more common 'real life' horror story. One thing that often crosses my mind is, the people that lived there before the murders and the haunting. Did they just see their old home on the news and say 'holy crap'? When the movies and notoriety came, were they like 'we used to live there, holy crap'?

I've heard before that Piper Laurie (the mom from Carrie) once lived there. I can't find anything to back that up online, but that'd be a weird coincidence if true. I'm honestly not that concerned if the haunting is true or not. I do admit, those old photos still make me a little uncomfortable. I used to see them in all those 'house from hell' articles as a kid and nothing can shake off the spooky vibes they carry.

The Diller Made Me Do It

It's Halloween and Phyllis Diller has pumpkin spice cocaine running through her veins. She's locked herself away in the Haunted Mansion and living her best life. Various Disney characters stop by to join the spooky fun and even participate in ritualistic cult activities. By the end of the night Snow White will write a 'Let's Not Meet' post about Phyllis and Clarabelle is dead. Diller has come to your little Toon Town, sheriff.

Ichabod's Bogus Journey

Sleepy Hollow has problems. For one, the damn Headless Horseman is constantly terrorizing the town. The other? That whole milk crate thing. Where the hell do they keep getting those anyway? There's a serious problem with a Headless Horseman and these damn fool kids all have broken hips! The local school teacher, Ichabod Crane, is into the paranormal. So he forms a team with Rip Van Winkle and some dog to go confront that damn headless fool. He's a shitty teacher, so the whole milk crate thing doesn't even get a speech in homeroom. Things don't go how you'd expect them to as they face all sorts of monsters in a spooky showdown with a wicked witch. For the record I didn't make any of that up, that's what happens, and yes this is one weird cartoon. Also people keep hurting themselves climbing milk crates. Happy fall y'all.

This week we're going to listen to an episode of Lights Out from December 16, 1936. Poltergeist (also known as Gravestone) is the tale of 3 friends who discover the hard way that you shouldn't dance on graves. It's a great scary story with an ending you didn't see coming.

Not As Brightly Lit: Amityville Fools Day

LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD HERE

It's April Fools Day and a good of a time to talk about something that most people think is a hoax. This week, Rob takes a little time to look at the Amityville Horror. Once the scene of a horrific mass murder then later became one of the most famous haunted houses in the world.

Nevermind The Ghost, What House Did He Go To?

I haven't been having a great day. Which means a Halloween post in March. MARCHOWEEN! I know I post Halloween stuff randomly as is, but to be honest... I'm just coming up with some introductory text. Somehow this cowboy lost all of his Halloween candy. Fortunately when he decided to take a break at the obviously haunted house, another friendly kid offers to share his. Whatever house he hit had full sized bars, but plot twist, the other kid is a ghost. I'm guessing the cowboy didn't notice it was a haunted house, or maybe the candy was poisoned and the ghost kid died a little earlier. If that's the case, our little cowpoke is doomed.

At least it wasn't a peanut butter chew.

Not As Brightly Lit: Ancient Burial Grounds

From The Amityville Horror to Pet Sematary, ancient burial grounds have long been the cause of haunted houses in popular fiction. Rob talks about the graveyards he grew up around that are now the site of newly built homes.
