Optimus Prime (2007 Movie Version) [Classic Class]

Lately, a documentary about the live-action Transformers films has been making the rounds, and honestly, the random behind-the-scenes insanity has been pretty funny. It also got me thinking about those movies again—which, despite how much people complain about them, always seem to be playing on some FAST channel. Funny how that works.

As I’ve said before, flaws and all, I have fun with the movies. It felt like a good excuse to dig into my ever-growing backlog and finally build this Blokees Transformers Classic Class kit of Optimus Prime as he appeared in the 2007 film.

This one was a Christmas gift from the Mrs and works as a nice counterpart to the 2007 Megatron kit I covered earlier this year.

 I still remember when early images of this design started circulating around 2006. People lost their minds—mostly because the leak was of the truck mode. Instead of the classic flat-nosed cab, we got a long-nose truck with blue and red flames, and for some reason a lot of folks expected a straight G1 adaptation. Personally, I was kind of hoping he'd be for something closer to the G2 Laser Rod Optimus Prime design due to the truck… and, hey, he did end up with glowing swords.

At that point, after 20-something years of Transformers, I was already used to redesigns. I thought the movie designs looked cool—leaning more into something alien—and I was always ready for something new.

This kit ended up being a really pleasant surprise. Not just because I like Transformers or Blokees, but because the build itself was more involved than I expected. Most Blokees kits are quick, but this one took some time. All those layered details in the movie design? They’re layered here too.

I assumed parts like the chest might be larger, single molded pieces—but no, it’s built up from multiple components, which gives the figure a lot of depth. There’s also a solid amount of paint detail on things like the flame deco. It looks great—likely tampographed, which I’m totally fine with.

One thing that I've always noticed with this design is just how long and skinny his legs are. It never fully clicked until I was putting him together, but they honestly look like a pair of flared jeans with flame airbrushing—like something you’d find at Hot Topic in the late ’90s or early 2000s. I have no idea if that was intentional, but I can’t unsee it now.

Once assembled, Optimus is nicely articulated and can pull off a wide range of poses. He comes with his blaster, both swords, and multiple hands to make the most of it. Like other movie Blokees kits, he also has a light-up feature… and like my robot mode Optimus Primal kit from Rise of the Beasts, the battery was dead out of the box. Awesome.

My only real complaint with the build is that some parts require a very specific touch to get seated properly. I’ve got big fingers, so that didn’t help, but a few pieces definitely tested my patience. The sides of his head, in particular, kept popping off even when they seemed secure. After a few attempts—and some wiener voiced cursing—I ended up disassembling and rebuilding that section entirely. No idea what I did differently the second time, but it worked.

Also worth noting: to equip the swords, you’ll need to partially disassemble the forearms. It’s not a huge deal, but something to be aware of.

Despite a few frustrations, this was a really fun build. I enjoyed the layered construction, and the final result looks fantastic. There’s also an “EX” version with metallic parts and upgraded paint, paired with an “Iceman” Megatron in a two-pack. Based on how good this standard release turned out, I imagine those look incredible.

On its own, though, this Optimus already feels like one of the more premium Classic Class kits—and it looks the part.

Optimus Prime Trailer Set [CT01]

I’m having a hard time putting into words just how smitten I’ve unexpectedly become with Blokees Wheels. What started as a fun sideline to the kits I’ve loved over the past few years has grown into something all its own. This Optimus Prime with Trailer kit is a fun release outside the regular blind box Wheels line and a neat set by itself.

Think of it as a special edition of the Optimus Prime from 01-Roll Out — essentially the same cab, just upgraded. The cab is the standard Optimus Prime with a Solidex body, giving it that satisfying heft. In addition to the wind deflector, there’s an alternate pair of smokestacks (originally from the Titanium Edition) that you can swap in for a more classic appearance, as opposed to the IDW-inspired design of the standard version. Another upgrade is the dual wheels for the rear section of the truck — a small difference, but one that makes a bigger impact than you’d think. For a more in-depth look at the cab’s intricacies, check out the Hologram Edition we talked about a few weeks ago. For now, I want to focus on the trailer, which really sets this set apart.

The trailer is a faithful replica of Optimus’s classic trailer and is compatible with the prior blind box editions. It opens up to reveal the classic Combat Deck mode, complete with Roller and the Combat Deck robot, which can attach to Roller as well. The trailer’s shiny silver color pops visually and pairs perfectly with Optimus’s classic colors, plus the blue of Roller and the Combat Deck robot. Assembly is easy — it’s practically a clamshell — and the dual tires on the axle are a nice touch. It also includes the stabilizers from the original toy: little legs that fold out to support the Combat Deck and provide extra stability. I don’t know why, but I really appreciate that attention to detail.

Roller assembles easily and can seat a Blokees driver figure or another Inchman. I’d love to speculate that a Diaclone driver might fit, but it’s a bit small. The Combat Deck robot can raise up on its stand or fold into a compact form. It’s got an articulated radar dish and claw arm, recreating the original toy and giving it that classic robot charm. There’s also room for about three regular Wheelies vehicles inside the trailer (without Roller), adding even more fun.

There’s a real thrill to playing around with the trailer, which admittedly is a little silly given how many variations of Optimus’s trailer I’ve owned over the years. Still, this set is neat, and the overall package makes a fantastic addition to my Blokees Wheels fleet.

Optimus Prime [BMK Series 1]

You don't get Transformers without Optimus Prime. You just don't. He's the main character and is always going to show up in some way. In other news, water is wet. So it's not surprising that he's in the first series of Yolopark's BMK kits, and you know what? It's a nice looking Optimus Prime.

Assembly is really easy, even for a BMK kit. Calves connect at the knees, arms on the shoulders, and the head pops onto the neck. This is one of those times where it really can't get any simpler than that.

Optimus comes with his standard Ion Blaster that can be held in either hand... though it only feels natural in his right one. The right hand, not the right hand for the job... which is still the right hand...

This is obviously a simple build, but it results in a satisfying looking classic Optimus Prime and I'm thinking he'll look great in that eventual display.

Optimus Prime (Hologram Edition) [Wheels 01 – Roll Out]

It’s honestly a little wild that it’s taken me this long to start talking about Blokees Wheels here on Zone Base. Wheels is another blind-boxed Blokees series, similar to the Galaxy and Defender versions I’ve covered for years, but this time the focus is on vehicular models.

Since we’re looking at Transformers Wheels kits, these represent the alt modes rather than the robots themselves.

Like the other Blokees lines, each wave includes chase versions. Following the Defender Version format, buying a full box guarantees at least one chase. And just like the Defenders, the chase is an alternate version of one of the regular figures in the wave.

Today we’re looking at the Hologram Edition of Optimus Prime.

In this wave, you could pull a standard Optimus, the Hologram Edition (translucent), or a Titanium Edition with metallic paint. The standard Wheels kits include at least one part cast in Solidex—a material designed to look and feel like die-cast metal. It’s not actual metal, but it has that same satisfying heft, similar to what you’d find in a Hot Wheels car. It gives the finished model a really nice weight.

The chase figures skip the Solidex component and instead include an Inchman-style driver figure that can pilot the Wheels vehicles. That’s a pretty neat trade-off.

Optimus here is based on his IDW Comics design from around 2009–2011. It’s very close to the classic flat-nosed truck we all know, but with a bit of added flair in the form of a wind deflector and sporty striping. It’s a strong look. And regardless of which version you pull, it’s compatible with the separate Wheels Optimus Prime truck and trailer set, since it uses the same truck model.

The chassis appears to use a universal system across the Wheels line, which should make customization pretty straightforward.

What makes the Hologram Edition stand out, of course, is the translucent plastic. While the chassis and chrome-painted grille remain opaque, most of the body is cast in clear plastic, giving it a sharp, almost ethereal presence. I’ll admit, I think I prefer this version. I’ve always had a soft spot for colorful translucent plastic, and since I plan on picking up the truck and trailer set later, this version will make for a really nice visual contrast.

The included driver is a fun bonus. Cast in a pleasant blue translucent plastic, it almost feels like a literal hologram operating the vehicle while the robots are in disguise. You do have to assemble it yourself, and it’s tiny—so it was a little fiddly. Interestingly, there are two torso and waist pieces on the sprue, but only one set of limbs. Once assembled, though, the driver has just enough articulation to fit into pretty much any Wheels cockpit.

I really like what Blokees is doing with Wheels, and you can absolutely expect to see more of them here in the future.

IDW Optimus Prime [Galaxy Version 06 – Parallel Universe]

What is Megatron without Optimus Prime? Also in that Galaxy Version 06 – Parallel Universe case I bought a bit back was an IDW Optimus Prime, naturally. Optimus represents his Cybertronian form as seen in the IDW Transformers: Stormbringer comics. To be completely honest, I never paid this design much attention back then. No real reason — I guess my mind just glazed over it. However, when assembling this kit, I found myself appreciating it quite a lot.

This is another one of those Blokees Galaxy Version kits that feels a little more deluxe than the others. There’s even a chase version of it as Orion Pax that looks spectacular as well, but there’s really no beating a good Optimus Prime, and that’s exactly what we’ve got here.

Optimus looks pretty stocky, which is funny since he’s not the squared-up version we’re used to thanks to his Earth-based designs. Actually, pre-Earth designs for him are usually extra stocky or at least adjacent to his traditional look. This one feels like it stepped straight out of a mecha shooter game. I could totally see him in something like Virtual On. Actually, does anyone remember that SNES Generation 2 game that got cancelled? Obviously he would’ve looked more traditional in that, but a design like this would have been amazing in something like that.

I’m pretty fond of his forearm blasters — come to think of it, I think I always like forearm weapons. They just look cool, you know? Optimus also has twin blasters mounted on his back, which look super cool as well. They create a nice parallel to his smokestacks in more traditional designs.

I know it’s just the standard mix of red, blue, and gray with some yellow highlights, but the classic Optimus Prime colors really pop on this design. They’re a little brighter and give him an almost electric look. Optimus has a variation of his Ion Blaster, which may be intended as a different rifle, but it’s what I associate with him by default. It’s a pretty rad-looking gun, and honestly, Optimus looks pretty hardcore. You know — for a pacifist… he’ll absolutely kill the shit out of something.

Of course, he’s got the standard set of Galaxy Version hands and the display stand. Like Megatron, he also came with a pew-pew blast effect that I didn’t include in the photos. I actually took the pictures and noticed it sitting off to the side afterward. I know some folks really like those effects, but I’m admittedly a little indifferent.

This is just a really sharp-looking Optimus Prime once you’ve got him assembled. Galaxy Version, being a blind box series, really benefits from all these alternate takes on familiar characters. Someone like Optimus has had a million different forms over the years, and that could get boring in a regular toy line — but it’s fun here. The design looks great, and in Blokees’ signature style it really shines. It’s a solid Super Robot look — a mix of tech and ornamental design that just works for me, man.

Optimus Prime [Cyberworld/Armored Cyber Changers]

Being the main character, Optimus Prime is bound to make a few repeat appearances in any Transformers toy line. For Transformers Cyberworld, today we’ll be looking at his second release — a big improvement over his first. We talked about that one a few months back and while I liked it, there was no ignoring its faults. He looked great in robot mode, but the various hollow parts were clearly visible in truck mode. That was disappointing.

Thankfully, those hollowed-out parts are hidden a lot better this time around. his Optimus is like the “Offroad” version of Bumblebee we looked at a few weeks ago. Both were originally solicited under the Offroad name, but that labeling is missing from the packaging. So this is just “Armored Cyber Changer Optimus Prime” — as opposed to the “Cyber Changer Optimus Prime” hanging on the next peg at Walmart. That Offroad name would’ve made things easier in the end, but naming systems in Transformers are a regular nitpick of mine.

I like this Optimus a lot better than the regular one. It looked great, but that vehicle mode was impossible to ignore. This time we’ve got a solid robot and vehicle with a very interesting sculpt. Optimus transforms into a non-descript armored offroad truck, and that design carries over nicely to his robot mode, creating a more unique version of Optimus that I think looks great. He’s pleasantly blocky too — just super chonky in all the right ways. A very satisfying little robot toy. 

Optimus has the same articulation and dimensions as other Cyber Changers (armored or not), which I oddly appreciate for reasons I can’t fully explain. They’re just satisfying little figures. His traditional red and blue colors look super sharp, and the truck’s brush guard makes for a nice variation of the car-front chest Transformers often have. He looks rough and tumble — it’s a good look. Optimus also doesn’t have his trademark faceplate, which actually works really well with this sculpt. I’m anticipating (and hoping for) all sorts of repaints from this mold. It’s a good Optimus, but it could easily be a variety of other characters. It’d make a great Clench — just imagine it in black and purple!

Transformation uses the standard Cyber Changer scheme. I’m guessing the shared engineering across the line helps keep costs low — and I’m totally fine with that. The torso compresses and accordions while the arms fold up and the legs fold in. Simple, effective, and it reminds me of the auto-transformations from early Beast Wars and Machine Wars basics… just without the spring.

The truck mode is really good — pleasantly blocky again, with a bit of a military vibe to the sculpting. It looks tough, and I could see this scaled down into one amazing Micromaster. The “Armored Up” gimmick that differentiates Armored Cyber Changers from the standard versions is a large weapon that converts slightly, giving it some interchangeability between modes. I’ve been taking these as they come, usually just accepting them as a tacked-on gimmick. This time, though, I’m outright enjoying it.

Optimus comes with a big chain gun that makes for an imposing weapon — it’s giving me Big Convoy’s Big Cannon vibes. Its alternate mode opens into two cannons and wing-like extensions. At first glance, the dual barrels might look like halves of the gun barrel, nothing too special — but look closer and you’ll notice sculpted rockets inside those barrels, suggesting it’s a rocket launcher. The bright blue colors and dual rockets remind me of Robots in Disguise Ultra Magnus with his “Blue Bolts” weapon. Thinking about it, this would make a good Magnus toy too.

The cannon can attach to the truck mode’s roof and looks 100% at home there. And those wings? They plug into the robot mode’s back, making for an upgraded look that isn’t called out on the packaging but is clearly intended. I really should’ve included a picture of it, but I wanted to show clean shots of the toy as it’s “supposed” to look. It’s literally the same position as the truck mount. It looks so natural there — can’t just be my imagination. Or maybe it is. I swear I saw Elvis at a Walmart once. He was buying ice cream.

Clearly, I like this figure. Its simplicity might turn off the display-case crowd, but it’s right up the alley for folks who just like neat toys. I’ve made all sorts of comparisons — from Microman to G.I. Joe to Action Masters — when talking about Cyberworld. It’s chock full of the DNA from toy lines that came before, and those influences are impossible to ignore. Yes, it’s simple, but sometimes simple works.

This is a cool toy line that I enjoy a lot. Without a doubt, this is my favorite of the line so far. It’s just a cool robot toy — the low price is a bonus. The colors pop, the sculpt is sharp, and the play gimmick works great. Everything just comes together solidly. Like I said, I could see this mold repainted into a million different characters — and hope I do. An arctic camo version would be great. Like everyone else who writes about Transformers, I’ve got plenty of opinions and think Hasbro should hire me. But with this toy, I think I’m actually onto something.

SG Optimus Prime robot & vehicle [Defender Type 03- Heavy Metal War]

Shattered Glass is a fun Transformers mirror universe setting. Evil Autobots vs Good Decepticons with plenty of role reversals and neat paint decos inspired by other characters. It's fun. Personally, I've mainly enjoyed the concept and the look of the characters over the actual fiction used. That's not a slam, just a take. I like to view the alternate universe more as a Cybertronian version of the Upside Down. Several of the Autobots mare made to be a little scary... so it's fitting.

Defender Type series 03 features kits of SG Optimus Prime as a robot and vehicle and it's nice to have the matching set. They are repaints of the Optimus Prime robot and vehicle from Defender Type series 01. I've only talked about the vehicle kit here so far, so let's focus on the robot mode more. The vehicle is pretty much a match for the robot mode as you can see, but man I do love the way it looks with the Combat Deck Auto-Launcher attached. Gives me Blaster Master vibes.

I've got a few different versions of the Defender Type Optimus Prime mold and it's pretty spectacular. The unique look these Blokees kits have really make for one adorably hardcore looking robot. This Optimus is about to kick Megatron's ass and walk a oil puddle through it. Despite his small size, he's well articulated and has one beefy version of the trademark Ion Cannon. It looks out of Metal Slug and that pairs so well with the overall look of the figure.

Like I've said, I really like the look of Shattered Glass Transformers and the purple and black on Optimus is just great. Black versions of Optimus have always looked cool, but the purple is just so very much better. The black parts contrast with it in a way really pops. SG Autobots usually have busted windshields (because it's ShAtTeReD gLaSs), which both of the Optimus kits we're looking at have. It's a good contrast against the slick purple and black colors. It works with my Upside Down take on the universe as well. SG Optimus's voice is supposed to sound like Venger... but Vecna works too. Dang, just imagine if one of Vecna's visions were the SG equivalent of a Matrix Vision? That's be more than five faces of darkness.

Optimus Prime Type MFS-3 MechaGodzilla [Synergenex]

It was starting to feel like this toy would never come. I had pre-ordered it with the Godzilla Type Megatron we looked at a little while back. For whatever reason, it was a month a half before this one shipped. That was weird. Regardless, today, we'll be looking at the second half of the Transformers X Godzilla toys from Takara Tomy's Synergenex line. Optimus Prime has followed Megatron to Earth through the Space Bride. Megatron had scanned Godzilla, resulting in one pretty big threat.

To confront this, Optimus used the power of the Matrix to scan MechaGodzilla Kiryu and incorporated his technology into his body. Now teamed with the Japan Self-Defense Forces, Optimus Prime Type MFS-3 MechaGodzilla prepares to face The Emperor of Destruction. One thing certainly on the J.S.D.F's mind must be, is Optimus Prime now haunted by the spirit of the original Godzilla as Kiryu was?

Like Godzilla Type Megatron, Optimus is a repaint of a prior toy. This is a straight repaint of the Legacy Laser Optimus Prime that just looks outstanding. In truck mode his cab is a mix of Kiryu's colors and the trailer in a military green. The trailer converts into a battle station that I can see the J.S.D.F utilizing in the field. The battle platform has a robotic arm and laser cannon that I imagine utilizes the Twin Maser Cannon's abilities. The Laser Optimus Prime mold is a good base for a version of Optimus equipped with Kiryu's technology.

His laser sword and energy axe make for a good use of the Maser Blade abilities. The Maser Blade could deliver a strong electrical surge into Godzilla's body when stabbed. Kiryu's Back Unit is clearly represented by shoulder missile launchers. Like many Optimus Prime toys, Laser Optimus Prime has an opening chest with a removable Matrix of Autobot Leadership. This makes a good placement for Kiryu's Absolute Zero Cannon. While many were turned off by this toy when it was revealed, I think it really is a good fit for the concept.

I'm very fond of Optimus in this deco. The silver, gray, and blue look really great and the green trailer contrasts nicely. The sword, axe, and Matrix are cast in a very nice translucent yellow that matches the electrical energy output from Kiryu's weaponry. The MFS-3 (Multipurpose Fighting System Type-3) markings look sharp and the MechaGodzilla badge on his chest is awesome. My favorite bit is the red interior of Optimus's helmet, which matches Kiryu's 'blood tears' facial detail. A more cynical person may see this as a cheap repaint, but they really knocked the concept out of the park. A lot of complaints towards this set have been that they wished Takara Tomy would have done more, but I'm really happy with what they did.

Optimus Prime [Cyberworld/Cyber Changers]

 

Being the main character of Transformers, you knew there'd be an Optimus Prime toy or two hundred in Cyberworld. Today we'll be looking at his Cyber Changer wave 1 figure. Cyber Changers are the basic figures from Transformers Cyberworld. They're the standard size for the line, with Armored Cyber Changers being the next up with larger bots (like Grimlock) coming in at random. Armored Cyber Changers are the same as regular Cyber Changers, but come with a large accessory.

Cyberworld Transformers have a unifying size to make them all compatible with the larger figures whom they can interact with. Think of them like Micronauts/Microman, GIJOE, Transformers Cyberverse (2011). It's pretty neat. The figures are 4" tall and feature basic articulation standard. Shoulders, legs, hips, knees. Heads look to be variable depending on the design. I've been comparing them to up sized Legend/Legion class toys, but those didn't have a universal compatibility like these.

They're a lower priced line than Generations or any of the other collector focused lines, so they're not going to be as fancy as a Masterpiece. However, for a cheap little bot they're pretty neat. What's so neat about them (other than small and inexpensive toy) is they feature some really creative designs. Optimus, for example, has had a million different toys... and this basic little guy manages to be unique. I mean, look at him... there's no mistaking this is Optimus Prime, and yet he's still unique looking. In robot mode, Optimus is big and strong looking with a newer take on his classic look.

Despite being a smaller toy, he has a satisfying amount of chonk that just looks right. Optimus is often designed as muscle bound, but it's pretty well established here. This Optimus will slap the shit outta Megatron, sending him running home crying to his Mega Mamma. Dad isn't going to do anything either, I mean.. you see that guy? He's swole AF. Transformation to truck mode is simple (it's a vibe) and a little different that you'd expect. His arms form the under chassis of the truck instead of the back of the cab. This leads to his smokestacks forming front mounted guns similar to his Transformers One design.

One thing that really stood out to was that his head fits much lower into the cab than I'm used too. The plate behind his head is actually the trucks front grill. I found that neat, and considering how rare it is that I find transformations anything more than utilitarian... that's saying something. I find the truck pretty cool looking and once again a unique take on his classic design.

Of course there's no ignoring the hollow parts exposing a simple toys limitations. A toy like this is going to have visible hollow parts and they are out in plain view in truck mode. There's possibly a trailer version coming that would hide a lot of it, but for now it is what it is.Maybe you can stick some candy in the back, make the most of it. Regardless this is a pretty neat little figure for now a lot of money (I paid $9 at Walmart). Robot mode is pretty good, but the truck mode exposes the limitations due to budget constraints. The hollowness is unavoidable and that grill could use a little paint. Still, I like it. Mostly for the robot mode, that's pretty neat looking.

Orion Pax [Galaxy Version 05-One]

Talking about Transformers One toys over the past year has meant talking about Orion Pax a lot... and there's still several more toys I haven't even touched! That's to be expected when you've got the main character of a franchise. Of course Orion is the earlier form of Optimus Prime who gets talked about often too. Main characters, it's going to happen. Orion Pax was really likable in the movie and has had a good bit of good merchandise, but it's been mostly hybrids of him and Optimus Prime.

Model kits, like today's Blokees, have been the main source for direct representations of Orion. I really appreciate that. In this kit, Orion appears as he before receiving a Transformation Cog. The classic Optimus colors look good on just about anything. To be honest, Orion Pax from Transformers One kinda reminds me of Biotron/Robotman. That's probably just a coincidence, but also it's something I can't unsee.

Once again the Blokees style works excellently with the TF One designs and we've got a great little figure once the build is complete. The build is simple and satisfying. The newer style (no, I will not stop praising it) and Orion's design really form one solid toy. This is one of those times someone would think this was a normal action figure, not a model kit. With all the articulation and the standard set of hands, the kit is expressive enough to match several onscreen scenes. He's got the laser pistol and display stand. That's to be expected. This is a solid kit and a nice representation of Orion Pax as you see him in most of the movie. Series-05 really is great.

Optimus Prime [Galaxy Version 05-One]

Being the main character of my main subject matter, I talk about a lot of different Optimus Prime toys. I don't even talk about all of them and there's still a lot of Optimus talk around here. Fortunately he gets some really cool toys. In Transformers One, we got another version of his origin that was pretty great with some pretty great toys as well. I've been praising these Blokees takes on the Transformers One characters and Optimus is no different. Peanut butter and jelly, Blokess and Transformers One. Some things just go great together. .

In addition to the parts that your standard Galaxy Version kit offers is that way cool take on his energy axe. It's always looked good, but was downright awesome the way they used it. Because of that, it stands out to me more here than the normal inclusion would. He's also got that cool generic rifle the various Trackers carry around. It's dumb, but for some reason I just like these generic guns. Of course there's the standard set of hands and display base to stand on. Don't forget that new Galaxy Version build that debuted in this series. It's so much sturdier and better. I can't express just how much better it is. So much. One thing I enjoy is his smoke stacks. Thanks to the way they attach, you can flip them around to simulate when he used them as a flamethrower.

It's just a coincidence, but a cool accident is still cool. I mainly liked that part as when I was a kid and playing with the original Optimus Prime toy, his smoke stacks often got turned around to be used as little gun turrets. Newer editions lack that ability, but my 1984 one could do it. Optimus has a standard Optimus color set, but it's a good color set. So of course it looks great here. Of note is the Matrix shining through his chest windows, which is a nice touch. I like it when there's something going on in those vehicle windows in robot mode. In the end, this is another Optimus... but not just another Optimus. It's a good Optimus. Nice things are nice.

Devastation Optimus Prime [Studio Series/Deluxe Class]

Transformers: Devastation was a pretty fun game and now that video game depictions are included in Studio Series, I'm glad to see it included. Admittedly I'm mostly glad to see it included for the character designs than the game itself. They had an almost Studio Ox look to them that I loved and feel like a counter part to the Studio Series 86 series I've been enjoying greatly. I am curious as to why the Devastation figures aren't given the 'Gamer Edition' title like the War for Cyberetron ones were, but I guess this is an easy way to keep them separated.

After all, there's multiple versions of the same character as a gamer edition in Studio Series is obviously going to be confusing. I've been critical of the naming in Transformers, so an attempt to stay simple it is appreciated. Once again, Devastation was a fun game, and the designs make for some nice looking figures. Especially with the cell shaded look from the game being carried over. I love cell shading, it's so pretty.

This Optimus has the unfortunate luck of coming out not long after the more higher end Commander Class Studio Series Optimus Prime, Missing Link Optimus Prime, and even the same price class Legacy Deluxe G1 Optimus Prime. After those toys meant to celebrate the 40th Anniversary, a regular figure is going to get some unfair comparison. Fortunately enough time has passed since those toys that I can look at it with some fresh eyes and appreciate it on it's own merits. Of course when it was announced, I was originally excited for it as I think it resembles a cab mode Ginrai/Powermaster Optimus Prime. That combined with that Studio Ox resemblance and I was sold right off the bat. In robot mode, this is a pretty great toy.

Lot's of articulation and the design just looks great. I appreciate that he has full smoke stacks. Toy safety laws usually have lead to the shortening of the stacks in the past 20 or so years. Obviously if it makes things safer for a child, I'm not taking any issue with it, but it is nice to see a full set. They are removable and look to be the right size to be safe if swallowed. Optimus also has a removable Matrix of Leadership in his chest. I'll never get tired of this gimmick no matter how many times its done. It's unpainted and the same color as the smoke stacks, so I assume they're molded from the same sprue. The Matrix cannot be held unfortunately, that's probably going to be an issue for someone I'm sure. While Optimus doesn't have his trademark Ion Blaster, he does have his Energy Axe. It has a molded in swoosh effect to resemble being swung in the game. It's a neat weapon. 

Transformation is pretty easy and... pretty much the same as other deluxe sized Optimus's. I guess there's no reason to overly complicate it. The truck is fine, though there's no ignoring the cab portion looking a little small compared to the rest of the truck. If there was a trailer, it'd probably look more proportionate. It doesn't bother me, but I'm sure that it gets under the skin of others.

Admittedly I mainly wanted the toy for the robot mode, so there's that. The energy axe can store on the area of the truck the trailer would fit over. I have no clue what that's called. Overall this is a pretty decent Optimus Prime toy. I was happy to see it in my Easter Basket from the Mrs. and have enjoyed it thoroughly. It's a good toy and it looks great. Once again, I really like it's overall visual. I also like Optimus Prime toys, he's a cool looking robot. Here's looking forward to the other Devatration figures.

Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus [Swapticons]

You'd be hard pressed to get a Transformers line without an Optimus Prime figure and since this is Swapticons we're talking about, you know he's paired with Ultra Magnus. Being silly little toys, they have some wacky faces with Optimus giving the people's eyebrow while Ultra Magnus makes an attempt to be like Optimus. The two link up to form a version of Optimus's truck and trailer mode that's pretty similar to some of it's newer depictions.

Slightly armored, a little sporty. I think someone in the design team must be really insistent on this look. It's not on every toy... but sure pops up every so often. It does look cool, so no problem. I can't help but to see Ultra Magnus as Gears though. It's the colors. A lot longer than I should remember, I had a dream where I found an Ultra Magnus made from a Gears toy. So now sometimes I'm reminded about that dream when I see an occasional Ultra Magnus toy. You haven't dreamt about your hobbies? What's that like?

Optimus Prime Vehicle [Galaxy Version Defender/01 Shining Version]

I've been chomping at the bit to get a hold of the new Defender style Blokees kits. Trying my best to be patient for Amazon to stock them (coming soon) and waiting for the opportunity to get Blokees in general can be frustrating. Fortunately I was able to get two Galaxy Version Defender 01 Shining Version kits at Toylanta this year. Some dealers had Blokees and they went fast. Even casual fans can't resist them.

Defender Versions are smaller and some characters are in their vehicle modes that can be ridden by the robot mode figures. For all those who like to make Action Master comparisons and complain, here's more ammo. Of course I'm pretty sure if that's a complaint, Blokees aren't your thing regardless. Clearly a lot of us love these and they're lot's of fun.

This is Optimus Prime in his vehicle mode as you can tell. The kit snapped together super fast and looks great. His trailer isn't present, but the Auto-Launcher robot from the trailer's combat deck mode comes mountable on his trailer hitch and can be raised or lowered for offensive capabilities. You may have noticed the small guns on top of it's cockpit that aren't traditionally there. Those swivel to become handlebars so Optimus can be ridden like a scooter by robot mode Defender Version Blokees. Those are the new, smaller figures that are big time fun. This is a fun way to make the most out of these vehicle mode kits that's pretty adorable. Cab mode Optimus with the Auto-Launcher attached looks pretty great alone if that's not your thing. This is a great little toy that I enjoy a whole lot. You know, despite how cute these are... there's something seriously badass about them as well.

Optimus Prime with Lionblade [Beast Alliance/Beast Combiners]

We've reached the end of our look at the Beast Alliance toys from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts with today's look at Beast Combiner Optimus Prime with Lionblade. This is a rather fun toy as it draws strong comparisons to Lio Convoy, but also makes me think about the old Action Master Optimus Prime concept art involving him combining with a lion partner. This toy is a super fun idea.

The base Optimus Prime figure is a pretty decent representation of his appearance in ROTB in a simplified figure. It has a decent rang of articulation, not as much as a Generations figure, but decent enough for a basic toy. He transforms to truck mode fairly easily and mostly how you'd expect him to go... and can I make a comparison here?

When I returned to my look at Beast Alliance, it was just as the Transformers Wild King toys were starting to get shown off (I'm about two weeks ahead in writing posts, mind you) and I just cannot shake the mental comparisons I'm getting between this figure and Energy Master Optimus Prime. I wonder if there's some shared engineering going on. Energy Master Optimus Prime certainly has plenty of new parts and looks bigger... but look at the truck modes. They're very similar. Seeing a these toys are all designed in CAD these days, I don't think it'd be super hard to reuse designs. It could just be me seeing the similarities and coming to some wild (pun intended) conclusions... but I can't unsee it.

Lionblade, Optimus's animal partner is a new Maximal character who so far only exists as this toy. He's a nicely sculpted white mechanical lion with a gold mane. Yes, he's very similar to Lio Convoy in beast mode. I do wonder why they made him a separate character, but I'm not gonna argue with a new character. They're rare these days. Like the other Beast Combiner partner figures, he's large... but limited. Only his legs can move in a basic fashion. Actually, mine was loose right out of the box so I had to use some trickery to have him stand for the picture. Hopefully yours is better.

Transformation to armor is pretty much the same as the others. Remove tail and the top of the beast head, fit body onto the shoulders of the robot. The spring loaded gimmick modes parts into place whilst you plug that head onto whichever hand you chose and the tail becomes a melee weapon. Don't forget to position the bottom jaw from the beast mode as it's now a gun. In Beast Combiner mode, Optimus looks awesome. These toys feature a mixture of classic super robot and Beast Wars looks in a fun package. My only complaint is that the beast parts do limit Optimus's arm articulation some... but any robot toy veteran is used to limited possibility in combined forms. If I ever get those three Japanese exclusive Battlemasters, I'll make another return to Beast Alliance here on the site. For now though, our look at the line is done. It's a fun set of toys tied to a fun movie. The upcoming Transformers Cyberworld and Wild King feel spiritually similar and I'm looking forward to covering them here.

Optimus Prime [Legacy United/Deluxe Class]

Considering the amount of Optimus Prime toys released a year, you'd imagine it'd be hard to get excited over just one. Well, that's not the case today Zone Base readers, because we'll be looking at the Deluxe Class Optimus Prime from Transformers Legacy United. Similar to Takara's Missing Link Convoy, this Optimus is meant to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Transformers by making a figure that looks like the original, but updated with modern engineering. Think of it as the Transformers version of Masters of the Universe Origins. With this figure we get a toy that looks directly out of 1984 with a lot more articulation.

In all fairness, the original Optimus Prime was fairly possible for a toy of his era. This one, however, is a definite step up. It's fairly identical as well... with some obvious differences. It's a new sculpt... not a 100% match, but really close. Optimus is also a little smaller than the original toy funnily enough. I couldn't tell initially, but it became obvious when compared side by side. Being a standard retail toy, he's all plastic... but does have rubber tires. That's something I didn't expect at all. It's been a while since Hasbro has graced a main line Transformers toy with rubber times and I'm all here for it. It's a superficial touch... but I like it! Neatly enough, the tires are branded CYBERTRON RADIAL 275/80 R22. Cybertron Radials are the brand of tires used on Transformers Alternators. Neat, huh?

Optimus comes with his iconic laser blaster, in fact he comes with two. During the original run, a running change created two versions of the classic gun. Originally a fatter design, later versions got thinner (ozempic works on plastic?) as time went. My original had the fatter gun, but some reissues came with the skinny one. This initially confused me as I wasn't aware that there was a variation. There I was with a reissue and hey... the gun looked different. These days I've got quite a few reissues and there's been some variation in those guns over the years. That's why I'm glad he comes with both. That way whichever one came with yours, he cane use. One can store on his back as well, which looks pretty cool. His smoke stacks can also be held as guns, which is a fun little touch.

Speaking of pretty cool, Optimus has that energy axe he's become known for using since More Than Meets the Eye episode 2. This axe is specifically based on the version that was packed with The Transformers Collection Convoy reissue. He's also got a Autobot Matrix of Leadership that can be stored in his chest (but not held) that's specifically modeled after the Matrix that came with the 2002 New Years Special reissue. I love how this toy homages so many things from prior toys without being completely obvious about it.

Optimus is very well articulated, something that isn't obvious at first glance. He looks so much like the original toy that I wouldn't be surprised if he was mistaken for it. He almost transforms like the original as well. Most noticeably, the hands fold inside of his forearms instead of being removed and probably lost under the couch. Guns and axe easily store in vehicle mode and everything is nice and compact. It's pretty obvious that there's no included trailer. I'm hoping a future edition will be released with one. That'd be perfect. He is compatible with the Earthrise and Original Optimus Prime trailers. Potentially with others, but those are the ones I know for certain work. The Earthrise works best as his slightly smaller size makes the G1 trailer comically huge. Overall, this is a very neat toy that I'm very happy to own. I look forward to buying every ridiculous reuses of it in the future. 

Optimus Prime [Studio Series/Deluxe Class]

Of all the Optimus Prime toys from Transformers One I've been talking about lately, this one has to be the nicest. Before getting it, I was convinced that the Prime Changer was the better toy. I'm fully admitting how wrong I was. As much as I liked that Prime Changer version, this is one impressive Optimus Prime. After 40 years of buying the guy, you'd think it'd be just another one. I honestly felt as though I had gotten a much more premium toy. All gushing aside, this is a Deluxe Class price point version of Optimus Prime as he appears in Transformers One. Being a Studio Series toy, he of course is much more screen accurate and is intended to represent Optimus Prime proper and not Orion Pax. As I was taking him out of the box, there was an audible 'oh wow' and a couple of those moments where you just hold something and approvingly shake your head. It's hard for me to say anything else, I'm very enamored by this toy.

Optimus is well articulated in robot mode. With all sorts of joints and ankle tilts, you could probably roll him into a ball. BALL MODE! One bit that impressed me was his crotch piece and there is no better way to say that without it sounding weird. There is an additional layer of it that moves with his upper thighs that adds to the visual appearance. Most toys just have a crotch and you can see the legs joined to it. Optimus has that little piece on top that adds to the illusion. That's neat. As for accessories, he's got quite a few. His trademark Energon Axe is here that can be plugged into either hand for that signature look. The axe can also be stored on his back and between legs in vehicle mode similar to the Prime Changer. Also similar is the smoke stacks that can be used as pistols. They're more detailed, so I don't think these are reused parts. Additionally Optimus has a removable Matrix of Autobot Leadership and dual blasters that mount on the front of his truck mode providing some extra firepower. The Matrix cannot be held, but looks extra nice through his chest window. The vehicle mode dual blasters store in Optimus's backpack in robot mode. I like to think of them as a jet pack.

Transformation is pretty similar to the Prime Changer with some extra work. Seeing as both are similar toys released at the same time, I wouldn't doubt that there's shared engineering. This being the nicer toy, there's a little more involvement in the pieces. This results in a more impressive looking truck. A common complaint I've seen is that his hands are exposed in vehicle mode. This is true, though if you have them positioned with the outer sides of them pointing out, they blend better. Those dual blasters I mentioned earlier can be plugged into the trucks grill providing a battle mode. It looks great and adds to Optimus's offense capabilities. I really appreciate the extra detailing in. Truck mode is very impressive looking and is just cool. This is a very neat Cybertronian variation of the classic Convoy design. I'm very pleased with this toy overall. Considering the Prime Changer is sitting next to it at local stores right now for a little less money, it's really the more premium of the two. Both are solid figures and great Optimus prime toys. This Studio Series version however, really sells the difference between the price classes. They did a great job.

Optimus Prime/Orion Pax [Transformers One/Prime Changers]

Like Rise of the Beasts, the Transformers One toy line has a separate 'main line' series of toys obviously intended for younger audiences with the Studio Series aimed more at collectors. Also like Rise of the Beasts... the main line is really neat and many adult fans are enjoying them just as well. The new Prime Changers size class is similar to Warrior Class toys from Robots in Disguise 2015 as it's a simpler figure than a standard deluxe with maybe a slightly lower price depending on where it was purchased. I don't have a RID 2015 Warrior Class toy pictured for comparison, but they feel extremely similar in build and articulation. Sort of a hybrid of a Deluxe and a Core Class if you will and oddly extremely similar to a standard TF from around 20 or so years ago. So far I've loved my experience with this new size class and would like to see it continue for mainline toys going forward.

Optimus Prime/Orion Pax is going to get a lot of new toys for Transformers One. Obviously Optimus gets a lot of toys from each movie, but he's specifically one of the main focal characters in this one. This version is sort of a hybrid design of Orion Pax and Optimus's designs as it mostly resembles a Cogged Orion Pax, but has Prime's smokestacks and head. I'd be inclined to believe a straight up Orion Pax figure using this mold as a base is in the works. This is a neat toy and I like it quite a bit. There's a fair amount of articulation despite the class having less. His paint is pretty good and there's quite a bit of accessories. In the picture you can see the Energon Axe. That can be held and thanks to some cool sculpted details looks like it's being held and not replacing his hand. The axe can also be store on his back or in vehicle mode. Optimus's smoke pipes can detach and be held as dual pistols... that's a cool touch. Additionally, there's a Matrix of Autobot Leadership in his chest that can be held. Frankly there's quite a bit in this for a 'lesser' toy.

Really the only 'lesser' thing I noticed and the lack of over abundant articulation. He has a decent amount, but smaller joints like ankle tilts aren't there. Transformation is easy and everything goes where it should without much struggle. I did get a touch confused with his legs, but that was me mentally trying to transform him like another toy. After so many thousands of these things... it happens. In vehicle mode, Orion/Optimus is a Cybertronian version of the traditional truck we're all used to. It's not my favorite Cybertronian version of the Optimus truck... but it's neat and growing on me more everyday. I really see that classic flat nose truck in the design. The truck is pleasant enough and rolls around pretty smoothly. This is a well done figure, it's nice and neat without any kibble from either mode. There's a decent amount of usable articulation with a nice assortment of clever accessories. It's almost like the 'lesser' size class kept them in check long enough to make a good figure without going overboard. It's the right kind of simple. So far I really like Prime Changers as a Transfomers size class. I'd like to see them more in the future even replacing the current Warrior Class.

Optimus Prime/Orion Pax [Transformers One/Iacon Race 3-Pack]

The Iacon Race continues with our look at Optimus Prime/Orion Pax. This toy is a repaint and retool of a Cyberverse Optimus Prime Turbo Changer that I never got, so it's my first time experiencing the mold. It's mostly the same with a different robot mode chest and vehicle mode front end from what I can tell. This is of course to make him more accurate to his appearance in Transformers One which is a Cybertronian based design. Being that Optimus toys are pretty similar, it clearly didn't take too much to make it work neatly enough. Being a One Step Changer toy, he obviously has a simple spring loaded transformation and very basic articulation. Only his shoulders can move and that's ok. These are meant to be inexpensive toys based around a gimmick. Optimus has his energon axe in place of a left hand and that's neat. Not all of these get weapons.

I like the look of the truck quite a bit. It's big, bulky, and neat looking thanks to the Cybertronian design. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but not everything has to be. Honestly, there's nothing really extra to say about it. This is an Optimus Prime toy and not much more. I do think in a more interesting set of colors it would look a lot better. Like the 2007 movie Optimus flame pattern would really pop. For some reason I can see Machine Wars Soundwave's colors on it, probably because of the blockiness of the truck. I'd like to think something like that would make for a cool promotional item. Ultimately it's the least interesting of the 3 pack, but I don't mean that in a negative way what so ever. It's a perfectly serviceable Optimus Prime and that's all it's trying to be.

Optimus Prime/Orion Pax [Transformers One/Race Changers]

The Transformers One toy line has some interesting reprints of older toy molds as store exclusives. Fortunately these happen to be toys I've enjoyed with some remolding done to keep them fresh. One such exclusive is the Race Changers 2-Pack exclusive to Target stores here in the states. Race Changers are a rebranding of Bot Shots with a name that makes me wonder if Trademark offices should have a mandatory 10 minute clip of that guy from Ted asking if you're sure about that before finalizing a name.

For the record, I loved Bot Shots and am very happy to see them making a come back, even if it's with an awkward name. Shinkalion is also doing something with Bot Shots, which leads me to wonder if more similar toys are on the horizon. I seriously love these things. Optimus Prime is a retooling of the standard Optimus Prime Bot Shots figure with a new truck grill and spoiler. The former dice style gimmick from the Bot Shots game has been removed and replaced with a standard Autobot symbol. Optimus has a brand new launcher as opposed to the ones that came with older toys which is surprising. Part of me wonders if it was an unreleased launcher from the original line. The launcher mechanism doesn't lock into place very well either. Frankly, I wish they would have skipped the launchers in favor of another figure in the set. You can either launch the toy in vehicle mode or push it into something to trigger the spring loaded transformation. In robot mode, Optimus is cute and squat. Bot Shots were charming and similar to Choro-Q toys of the past... which is part of the reason I liked them to begin with. It'd be great to see more of these again, but I do hope they'd give the line a better name.
