Halfway 2 Halloween~ Spook Sticks And Wrapped Candy

Before Spirit or Party City, the best place to get your Halloween on was a small store. Halloween in the old days was tailor fit for a smaller store like a Woolworth or your local drugstore. Those old smock and mask costumes always looked at home in the middle of the store where seasonal items usually would reside. Places like Dollar General and CVS are still well regarded by those who bleed pumpkin spice.

They're almost a tradition for me. I'll make a point to pop in and out of them and check out the wares. Admittedly these days the luster isn't as bright as it was back then. What was once a wonderland of seasonal spooky shit these days is generally a few pumpkins with 'live, laugh, love' on them and maybe some dollar hockey masks. The bullshit ones with a circle shaped vent pattern on the mouth instead of holes. Lame.

Woolworth's Has Pass Kits For $3.97

I never seem to shut up about Paas Halloween make-up kits. I love them so... I've said as much before, I know. This old Woolworth's commercial really hits home for me, just seeing all those kit's lined up with the Halloween Hair Spray Color cans, sure to complete the look. I don't know why I love this stupid holiday as much as I do. I don't care, ignorance is bliss and I'm fucking happy. Speaking from my own experience (because it's the only one I can), these old commercials really hit home for me.

It's not just a nostalgia thing, but a look back at a bygone era that I wasn't ready to be over yet. It's part of the reason I like the town I live in. There's a good 50% seemingly stuck in the 80's while the rest of the town lives in the now. It makes holidays like Halloween that I firmly keep one foot in the past during just a little more fun. Normally I make some bad joke about the video I post but, well, maybe I'm just wallowing in my own joy for the moment. Well, ok, did you see the adult costumes? Holy shit, what a nightmare.

Be A Shogun Warrior Or Annabelle This Halloween

Gang, it's the second week of August. I don't want to rush you or anything, but we've really got to get working on our Halloween costumes. I'm thinking of being Darth Vader. I wore that Spider-Man costume in the first grade, so it'd be pretty awkward to wear it again. I'm pretty sure that werewolf at the mall would find me again if I wore it twice. Mom's probably not going to threaten to whoop his ass again. We;; she might. Speaking of danger, I think Mickey is in it. He just started to eat that Sugar Daddy without our parents checking it first. There could be a razor blade in it. After all, the devil gave us all this candy.

Let's go to Woolworth

Look guys, I know it's only mid-September and that means one thing... THE CLOCKS TICKING! We need to get our costumes picked out. We need candy and some of those damn paper people with the long stretchy arms. Get your shoes on, we're going to Woolworth!

Woolworth Halloween commercial (1978)

I can't say if I've ever gotten my Halloween costume at a Woolworth. I can assume some of the candy I got could have been from there, but can't say for certain. I don't specifically remember it, but my Mom did grab my Collegeville/Ben Cooper costume sometimes and surprise me with it when I was pretty young. So it could have been from a Woolworth. I didn't think to ask, just happy with the ultra cool Spider-Man costume. I did, however, do a few years at a Haunted House that was once a Woolworth store at some point. That's got to count for something, right?
